Hippest food packaging-cum-accessories

In this age of recycling, what's a trendy, cola-drinking gal to do when she finishes off her carbonated beverage of choice?

Why, make it into a necklace, of course! All the cool kids are turning their food and drink packaging into something lasting and eco-friendly: jewelry and accessories that are surprisingly fashionable and wearable, in that quirky, I-just-polished-off-a-Kit-Kat sort of way.

Here are some of coolest accessories made from food we could find. Here's hoping the designers rinsed them out first.

A necklace for the spice girl

spice necklace
Not the Spice Girls, i.e. Posh, Scary, Sporty, Baby, and -- I always forget the fifth one, but for the girl who likes to keep her spices handy, this necklace is perfect!

Five Spice is a sterling silver necklace designed by jewelry maker Sarah Hood that features five tiny hand-blown glass vials filled with spices. The product description on the website doesn't specify what the spices are, but I'm going to take my best guess: fennel, I-have-no-idea, saffron, mustard seed, and cardamom. Can anyone else venture what that second spice from the left is? I don't have the $780 to buy the necklace to find out!

Sarah Hood has a whole line called "Spice" as well.

Eat at the Anaheim White House on Valentine's Day and win!

From February 8-14, diners eating at the Anaheim White House in Anaheim, California will have a chance at getting more than just a good meal. Restaurateur Bruno Serato decided that a good way to celebrate Valentine's Day was by giving away diamond and sapphire necklaces to one diner each night of that week. The winners will be chosen at random from each night's reservation list. Six of the necklaces are valued at around $1,000 each, but the necklace that will be given out on February 14th will be one-of-a-kind and is worth $10,000. All of the necklaces were designed by J. Mac Jewelers. The most expensive features a pinwheel of stones (pictured) set in white and yellow gold. The six others have white gold hearts with a large pink sapphire outlined in small diamonds.

The Anaheim White House is considered one of Southern California's most romantic restaurants, according to Serato. It is located in an almost century old building and serves Northern Italian food, with an emphasis on fresh seafood and the local specialties of Verona, Italy, which is where Serato himself is from. The restaurant is quite large, and with 7 nights to choose from you should still be able to make a reservation by calling the restaurant. If you live in Southern California, like Italian food and were planning on going out to dinner for Valentine's Day, a little extra incentive doesn't hurt, right?

Breakfast Earrings

Today is Black Friday, which means that millions of people will be storming the shops in search of holiday deals and discounts. I, like so many others, prefer to do a lot of my holiday shopping online, which is how I happened to come across these adorable Breakfast Earrings. The earrings dangle about 3cm and are made of miniature resin breakfast foods. You can mix and match a combination of slice of toast, a stack of pancakes, a fried egg and bacon, or pair up two of the same foods for a matching set. Each is accented with a small teal Swarovski crystal for a little bit of color, although it'll be hard for people to take their eyes of the delicious little decorations.

Bacon and eggs is a classic combo, but I can't help but think that a matching pair of toast earrings, complete with little butter pats, would be very cute, too.

Fast food accessories from Fred Flare

burger and fries earringsFast food fashion? Not quite my bag, especially if it's a dress shaped like an order of French fries. However, in small doses, I might be able to handle it.

Fred Flare has a pair of earrings shaped like a cheeseburger for one side, and French fries for the other. They're made by Cornyness, and are about a half inch in size, made from Fimo clay. I wouldn't say they're as sweet and cute as a pendant that looks and smells like a slice of banana cake, but they're fun nonetheless. (And good thing these earrings don't actually smell like a burger and fries!)

$8 at Fred Flare.
