Cape Cod Ice-creams

Here is a fun little site - personal recommendations on Cape Cod Ice-cream shops.

It uses the functionality of Google Maps to give ratings for each location. You can also, of course, get driving directions. Each map point links to a blog review. Ben and Bills Chocolate Emporium in 'historic' Falmouth receives a great review - five cones on their recommendation scale. They also recommend the Specials - Buttercrunch in the winter, LOBSTER!!! (yes real lobster) in the summer.

Summer Is Here: Ice Cream Blog Event

Beech Dean Ice CreamFinally Summer has hit the UK. The weather here is just fine and dandy and looks likely to remain so for the coming week. And when it is hot what does any honest foodie think of? Ice cream.

And it is not just me but blogger Sweet Pleasure agrees. So much does she love the frozen stuff she is planning a blog event during June (to be done by July 1st) for recipes, stories and photographs on ice-cream. Oh and gelato, sorbet, sherbets or anything else remotely frozen/creamy/icy.

Wild flavours are in this year. And if I had an ice-cream maker I would love to make my own. Instead I am going to see if I can find some local varieties to try. Having just delved into the freezer the one and only tub I have is from a local producer - mere minutes away from my parents and where I grew up and not so far from where I live now.

Ice cream vans - the end of a British tradition?

It could be the end of that quintessential British tradition - the ice cream van.

For those not in the UK a little explanation may be required. For the last 50 years or so it just wouldn't be summer without the annoying tinny jingle announcing the arrival of a Mr Whippy or a Mr Softy van dispensing ice cream cones (if you are lucky a '99' which comes complete with an alarmingly short piece of chocolate flake stuck in it). One of my earliest memories is of buying such a cone on a beach in Wales one summer; against the strict parental instructions that I would ruin my dinner. (I didn't; I ate both).

But again the anti-fun police are out and about and seem determined to see off the last of these vans.

Under an amendment to the Education and Inspection Bill, local authorities will be given new powers to stop ice-cream vans from operating near school gates. The move comes as operators claim that they are already being forced out of business by an over-zealous health lobby. Local authorities have banned ice-cream vans from using pay-and-display parking spaces and set up "ice-cream-free"exclusion zones around busy shopping streets.
