Frozen orange juice: A childhood pastime

young boy with ice pop

For me, the beginning of every season conjures up images from my childhood. The changing of the seasons makes me sensitive to the passing of time. And so, while opening the freezer door on a recent particularly hot June evening, I remembered the orange popsicles I'd make during the summer. I romanticized those blisteringly hot summer days as a 7-year-old boy with both of my sisters sitting outside by our inflatable "kiddy" pool. At that moment, I felt compelled to make the same super sweet, mildly acidic, and juicy ice pops.

I went to Bed Bath and Beyond to purchase the identical plastic popsicle molds I used as a child. On the side of the plastic mold is a straw so that you can drink the orange juice that melts to the bottom. For some reason, I remember that being the most enjoyable part of the treat. As a child, creating these orange juice popsicles –pouring orange juice in the molds and placing them in the freezer-seemed so thrilling.

I highly recommend these orange juice popsicles! They're a great way to keep children excited and hydrated during the sizzling summer days. Find out some wild and crazy ice pop ideas and check out the gallery of popsicles of different shapes and sizes.

Happy National Blueberry Popsicle Day!

blueberries

Come on, Blueberry Popsicle Day? Really? I guess if you're going to have a whole set aside for a food, it's cool that it's a rather specific, different food. Makes it more special somehow.

I don't think I've ever had a blueberry popsicle. I've had grape, orange, cherry, raspberry, banana, watermelon, root beer, and many other flavors, but I don't think I've ever come across a blueberry flavored popsicle.

Here's a recipe for Blueberry and Vanilla Parfait Pops. Not a pure blueberry popsicle because it includes frozen yogurt, but it's close enough. Here's one for Blueberry-Peach Tequila Popsicles. And if you'd like to find out more about blueberries in general, check out the U.S. Blueberry Council.

Ice pop art

Summer heat may get the craving for ice cream going in some, but to kids, it often means that they'll have a chance to get a frozen novelty from the ice cream man at the park. Frozen novelties are the brightly-colored, not-quite-ice-cream creations that kids love, often studded with rock-hard gumballs. They're more likely to call them ice pops, or something to that effect, than "frozen novelties," though they're usually more interested in whether they'll be able to get their favorite flavor or cartoon character than in the name. Artist Meredith Allen was inspired by summer and ice pops, but instead of eating them, she created a photo series of melting pops. All of the pieces are interesting (you can order prints of them online), but you might be inspired to try to take some shots of your own, too.
