Heineken Bars to open in airports

Heineken has their sights set on opening bars around the world and have chosen international airports to be their initial start-up locations and test markets. As Michael Fowlkes at our sister site Blogging Stocks reports, the Heineken bars are already open in Hong Kong, adorned with namesake furniture and paraphernalia including barstools, t-shirts, monitors with Heineken ads, Heineken sports events, and more. They apparently plan to open the pubs in airports worldwide before expanding to other locations within select cities.

I'm pretty sure the airport concept will work quite well. The bar itself would be a novelty, and beer is the second most popular beverage served in airports - coffee, of course, being number one. I doubt people are too concerned about where they get their libation while traveling - just so long as they have somewhere to relax and have a drink. That said, I have to agree with Michael's doubts about the other locations being as successful. Though I like the product, it is doubtful I would go to a bar in my own city where ALL they have to offer in the way of beer, whether it is in a bottle or on tap, is Heineken itself.

Hong Kong's Canto-Western cuisine

MSNBC had a wonderful in-depth piece about the phenomenon of Canto-Western cuisine, i.e. old-school interpretations of Western dishes by Hong Kong chefs.

I heard of this style of cooking years ago, but never knew much about it, or just how oddball some of its fusion dishes are. Imagine starting your meal with a prawn and fruit salad topped with a dollop of mayonnaisey cream. Follow that up with an app of Swiss sauce chicken wings. Here comes your steak sputtering on a sizzle plate awash in soy sauce and garlic gravy. If you're not in a meaty mood, get some fried rice layered with tomato or cream sauce.

The "go list" and finding good eats

Planning on doing some traveling this summer? Looking for a list of the dining hot spots that you should stop by for a memorable meal? Start with the go list from Food and Wine magazine, which picks out 376 restaurants chosen by "plugged in correspondents" from 50 cities around the world. They have the goods on restaurants like Michael Mina in San Francisco, Rockpool in Sydney, Ferran Adria's Fast Good in Madrid and Felix in Hong Kong, including a picks at both the high and lower ends of the price range.

Now, it's not possible that a list like this, even such a large one, would have all the great eats of any given city, but you aren't likely to have a bad meal by picking any of their choices. If you're traveling somewhere a little off the beaten path that isn't on the "go list," or are looking for something specific, it might be best to turn to another source of restaurant information. And the best resource, in my opinion, when traveling and looking for good eats is still Chowhound. Take some time to browse through their archives and look for recommendations, or pose a question on their message board if you're looking for something specific - like the best mexican food in Boise, ID.
