Cannabis Cuisine Ok'd in Australia

Just last weekend, a friend was telling me about soaking marijuana in vodka for three days before making what he described as "fabulous cocktails." (Well, no kidding.) Now I discover in The Australian that he wasn't so off base. In fact, you can build a whole meal around cannabis. The newspaper reports that ice cream, cake and beer made with pot have been cleared on health grounds by the country's top food watchdog, "despite fears the 'marijuana munchies' could trigger positive drug tests."

The decision results from an appeal by Andrew Katelaris, a former doctor in Sydney who was de-registered for supplying medical marijuana to patients, who said, "Our vision is that anything you can do with soy beans or dairy you can do better with hemp seed." In fact, Food Standards Australia New Zealand found that industrial hemp contained such low levels of the psychedelic ingredient known as THC that no one eating food containing it would feel the effect. (Oh, yeah. They should try my friend's brownies, which I always thought paired nicely with vodka-and now I know why.) FSZNZ even went as far as to say that "hemp seed is nutritious food containing sizeable amounts of protein, polyunsaturated fats and dietary fiber." So maybe now hemp advocates will stop making those ugly macrame bags and turn their attention to the dinner table instead.

DEA busts purveyors of marijuana-laced snacks

Earlier this week the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency served 11 warrants in the Los Angeles seizing what it called "large quantities of marijuana-laced edibles." Among the items seized were chocolate bars made with cannabutter and Grape Ape Soda whose labels bears a marijuana leaf and the warning "For Medicinal Use Only." Back in the day sugary snacks were for eating after one had smoked the evil weed. This begs the question: Does eating marijuana-laced snacks give you the munchies?

This isn't the first time that the DEA has busted makers of marijuana-laced candy or snacks. Take a look at this photo from last year's arrest of a San Francisco fellow who's now serving 70 months. Along with KeefKat and Buddhafinger (center row), there's Double Puff Oeo (lower left corner) obviously a takeoff on many a stoner's favorite snack, Oreos. Wonder if they're good with hemp milk?

Iced tea with a twist - C-Ice

Now I wonder who this product is aimed at; you could never tell from the website could you?

C-Ice is an iced tea with a twist and is about to be launched into the UK market. C-Ice is a black tea designed to be served chilled. The twist comes from the addition of hemp blossom syrup and an extract of hemp bloom otherwise known as cannabis. The extract is of miniscule proportions at just 0.0015%.

It is actually targeting the 'healthy, functional soft drink market' with the Austrian producers claiming various health benefits from the use of hemp - "Hemp is loaded with enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Its protein content, amino acids, omega oils, gamma linolenic acid and a perfect ratio of essential fatty acids make C-Ice a simply extaordinary little pick-me-up".

No details of cost I am afraid.
