Are you feeling opinionated on a range of food topics, notably diets? On the website Opposing Views, you have the opportunity to view experts' arguments for and against low-carb diets, caffeine use, biotech foods, and on becoming a vegetarian. Afterwards, you can post your own comments.There are so many overbearingly opinionated blogs. What a relief to finally find a site where doctors and scientists debate over hot topics. And, rather than totally ignoring what everyone else has to say, it fosters continued discussion with comments. Also, the site provides news headlines dealing with the various questions.
From all the food-related issues that Opposing Views thoroughly covers, I found the topic on caffeine the most interesting. This is no doubt due to my over sensitivity to caffeinated products. Also, increasingly we hear stories in the news stating that coffee can reduce our risks of diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and colon cancer. Just this past January, the media stated that doctors confirmed that while coffee helps fight type two diabetes, caffeine makes it worse. Such a contradictory study gives one an even stronger reason to check out this debate on Opposing Views.

If you had asked me 15 years ago what I thought the healthiest foods were, I probably would have said salad, pasta, bread, rice, and water. If you had asked me 35 years ago, I probably would have said Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Quisp cereal, pretzels, Pepsi, and Sara Lee pound cake.
Your son or daughter never eats bread crusts and refuses to tough either peas or pasta sauce. Picky eater,
right? Maybe not. As children age they develop preferences about their food, based on flavor, texture and, eventually,
political and nutritional preferences. Simply because a child refuses a food once, they are not necessarily a picky
eater. Often, a food will have to be offered to a toddler or child from 5 to 10 times before they become accustomed to
it. The kids who eat the foods are not really picky eaters. No child has been fooled into eating a carrot because it
was crunchy like a potato chip – and any parent whose child was “tricked” into that had a child that
wasn’t entirely averse to the carrot in the first place.
Not all school lunch options are created equal. Schools have dietary and budgetary guidelines to go by,
but giving students the freedom of choice in choosing what they eat is not something that the guidelines can always
take into account. My junior high school, for example, sold churros for 50(cents) and you can bet that many students
were eating those fried sticks of cinnamon and sugar goodness at least a few times a week. I highly doubt that whatever
nutritional standards the “taco casserole” was made to even considered the possibility that the meal would
be augmented with a churro and a bag of Doritos. Parents generally only thought about their kids’ school lunches
when they were asked for money on the ride to school and had no control over what the kids purchased with that money.
Fortunately for parents who worry about their child’s health and waistline more than they used to, this
isn’t the case anymore.
