Halloween candy that's better for you - Ha!

healthy halloween candy
Really? Do you really think you're going to do that much good by your kids by giving out toothpaste and boxes of raisins at Halloween? You can give that to the kids who come to your door (and they probably won't come back next year), but if your kids go trick-or-treating, they're bound to come back with all sorts of candy and your confiscating it at the one time of the year when it's okay to have a 24-hour sugar rush will make you a monster. It's one day.

Yet, Yahoo! Food channel has picked out their Top Eight Healthy Treats. No use calling it candy because it's not. They aren't fooling anyone, but if you're determined to at least try, here they are (with my comments included in some cases because I just can't help myself):
  1. Let's Do...Organic! Jelly Gummi Bears - these look suspiciously like Vitamin "gummy bears"
  2. Tiny Trapeze Caramels
  3. Figamajigs - We tried these here before on Slashfood. They aren't bad, but they definitely can't replace an M&M or a Skittle.
  4. Reed's Ginger Candy Chews - I may actually go for these because I love ginger.
  5. Florida's Natural Pocket Fruit-to-Go Stiks - Is this a healthy version of a Fruit Roll-up? And we know how regular Fruit Roll-ups do at Halloween.
  6. Angel Mints - If I got any sort of single hard mint at Halloween, I would be pissed. Don't we get those from the little bowl on the hostess stand when we go out to eat?
  7. Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Edamame - No, effin' way.
  8. CoCoaVia Blueberry and Almond Chocolate Bars - This could have worked except that we already know that CocoaVia is "healthy" for your heart.

Cool Hunting picks better eats for 2007

cool hunting's better eatsAlton Brown may have Good Eats, but Cool Hunting has better eats. In keeping with the Spirit of the Resolution, we point you to their list of posts that might help you on your resolution to "Eat better." As we all know, the resolution might be awesome, but unless you have the accompanying small print that defines how you plan to carry it out, you're probably going to give up on it by, oh, say Valentine's Day.

We need to be clear. There are ways to eat things that taste better, and for the likes of Nicole Richie, "eat better" might mean "just eat something, anything." Cool Hunting's food picks to eat better are focused on eating better foods for your health: Bear Naked Granola, Plum Produce, Pomegranate Syrup, Crispy Green Freeze Dried Fruit, e4b Fruit Purées, and Anteadote Teas

Healthy meal ideas and recipes from American Cancer Society

cancer fighting foodsWe've got a lot of sources for recipes on the Internet, from mega-magazine sites to the Food Network to google. The American Institute for Cancer Research can be added to that mix with their Recipe Corner, that features healthy recipes with foods that fight or might prevent cancer or help cancer survivors. For instance, this season, they've got recipes for Crunchy Veggies Wraps and Oatmeal Pancakes.

Another feature is the Health-e-Recipes weekly email that sends recipes right to your inbox. It looks like it's a popular thing, and the recipes must be pretty good, since there are already 10,000 subscribers.

Coconut water is the new Gatorade

green coconut - coconut water

I remember going to the Expo West trade show in Anaheim the last few years. It's a giant trade show for natural, whole and organic products. Unfortunately, I didn't get to go this year, but I did pop over to Epicurious' Daily Dish to find out what kinds of new products are on the horizon. One of them is coconut water.

Coconut water, not to be confused with coconut milk or coconut cream, is the liquid inside young, green coconuts that eventually gets absorbed into the coconut's flesh as it matures into those hard hairy things. Coconut water isn't of course, new, as people in the tropics have been drinking the stuff for years, but it is now being bottled and marketed as the new sports drink. Coconut water is naturally fat free, is very low in calories, and is very high in potassium and other electrolytes (just like Gatorade!).
