The Last Round of Parties at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival

One of our favorite events of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival was the cleverly titled Dim Sum & Disco party at the Setai Hotel. The late-night Asian soiree (it started at 11 p.m.) was hosted by Ming Tsai and the Setai's Jonathan Wright. There were bountiful displays of gourmet dumplings and innovative Ty Ku cocktails. Tsai's offerings included braised oxtail and foie gras shumai with sambal-soy syrup; and Island Creek oysters with a wasabi mignonette. Wright did black truffle and scallop har gau with a truffle emulsion; uni tempura with Osetra caviar and ginger crème fraiche; and fried Kurabuto pork belly with chili jam. Both chefs worked the line and interacted with diners.

After imbibing dozens of fresh and delicious dumplings and Ty Ku libations from master mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim, the stylish crowd danced to Donna Summer until the wee hours of the night. It was by far one of the liveliest events of the festival and one we hope returns next year.

Burger Bash Kicks Off South Beach Wine & Food Festival

The 2010 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival kicked off with a carnivorous bang at the Amstel Light Burger Bash, which was presented by Allen Brothers and hosted by Rachael Ray. The fourth annual Burger Bash, which was held in a tent behind the Ritz-Carlton South Beach, was a smashing success with 27 entries spanning celebrity chefs like Bobby Flay, Rocco DiSpirito and David Burke. Nearly 3,000 revelers chowed down on gourmet burgers and spuds, drank truckloads of beer and gawked at Rachael Ray.

The biggest line could be found at Morimoto's station, where the Iron Chef was serving a pork "Kakuni" burger with glazed pork belly. Over at Shake Shack's booth, the New York stalwart tried to ingratiate themselves to the Miami scene (they are opening a local outpost here in the spring) with free t-shirts, shakes and their famous burgers.

Women were swooning over Rocco DiSpirito, who spent more time posing for photos than dishing up his Pork and Chow Chow Slider, which was a mini pork patty, wrapped in bacon and served with chow chow and pickled beets. While Guy Fieri turned heads with his blond, spiky coif, fans weren't able to get too close to him as he was flanked by bodyguards all night. We were able to chat up the festival's founder and director, Lee Brian Schrager, whose top pick of the evening was Morimoto's porcine-themed burger.

In Defense of Guy Fieri

During a discussion at the Food Network's recent New York City Wine and Food Festival, author, "No Reservations" host and professional leather jacket wearer Anthony Bourdain asked his fellow panelist, culinary wunderkind Chef David Chang, "Who chaps your ass?" Chang was quick to rake Guy Fieri over the coals, citing his "douche glasses," and "stupid f***ing armband," and went on to ask a gleefully obliging Bourdain to "catch me and kick me in the ass" should he ever find him similarly adorned. Chang went on to add, "I'm sure he's a swell fella." The crowd went wild.

Not 24 hours later,
a "Saturday Night Live" skit portrayed the "Next Food Network Star" winner being pecked to death by birds.

So why are the cool kids picking on Guy?

I want to go to a party at Food TV superstar Guy Fieri's house. I imagine pyramids of glistening pork ribs and snow shovels full of hush puppies. I dream of patiently standing in line by the pool waiting for margaritas to be blasted into my open mouth by a fire hose while AC/DC blares over the loudspeaker.

You know what you're going to get with this dude. He's fun, entertaining and totally lacking in subtlety -- a one-man tailgate upon which nary a Michelin star shines. His contribution to the tired fusion trend was to awkwardly pair barbecue with sushi. He is who he is; now buy a book.

It's a soup! It's a cheeseburger! It's cheeseburger soup?

Kalie's Family Restaurant in Cleveland serves up cheeseburger soup, but the restaurant is not alone.

Food Network's Guy Fieri hunts down the meaty concoction at Grover's Bar and Grill in East Amherst, N.Y. on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." The episode, called "Dives Worth a Drive," is airing Nov. 6, 7 and 8 on the Food Network.
