Green Food Recipe Ideas for St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day cooking is easy if you're a food-coloring addict. Green milk, green oatmeal, green butter, green cottage cheese -- these and everything else can be greened up with a few flicks of that little plastic jar. But what if you don't like using artificial stuff from little plastic jars? Then you need to turn to nature. Luckily, nature seems to favor the Irish: There are tons of healthy green-ifiers out there.

To make green mashed potatoes (that taste exactly the same as regular potatoes): Stir in half a cup of green peas that you've puréed with a tablespoon of milk. If you use frozen peas, they should be defrosted but don't need to be cooked.

Green bread crumbs for chicken: In a food processor, pulse 4 slices of toast with 1/2 cup chopped parsley until you've got, yes, green crumbs. Toss this mixture together with 4 ounces grated fresh Parmesan and 1 crushed garlic clove.

The Green Restaurant Association Encourages Eaters to 'Dine Green'

With the bountiful supply of new "green" products seemingly multiplying on grocery-store shelves, the Green Restaurant Association announced today at the International Restaurant and Foodservice Show of New York a partnership with iloveny.com, dinegreennyc.com and citysearch.com to help consumers properly identify certified green restaurants.

As "green" becomes increasingly the foodie word du jour, it seems every product is eager to slap a "green" logo on its packaging. But Green Restaurant Association's CEO and founder Michael Oshman warns about the "Wild West of green" -- many companies use only a small percentage of the advertised product or only enough to make such a claim, false advertising he dubs "green washing." He warns curious consumers to carefully inspect product labels -- or to rely on his association, a third-party organization, for trusted certification.

The Green Restaurant Association's certification system rates individual eateries in seven environmental categories: Energy, Water, Waste, Disposables, Chemical & Pollution Reduction, Sustainable Food and Sustainable Building Materials in a point-system presented in a label not unlike those providing nutritional information.

Emeril Green coming to the Discovery Channel

Emeril Lagasse holding a handful of tomatoes
Fresh off his departure from the Food Network and the sale of most his empire to Martha Stewart Omnimedia, the Discovery Channel has announced that Emeril Lagasse has signed on to host a new cooking show called Emeril Green. This show will air on their Planet Green network.

The show will be set in Whole Foods Markets and will feature organic, free range and natural foods. According to the post at Treehugger, the show will feature a revolving cast of other cooks, farmers and food experts. I am really looking forward to seeing what Emeril can do with this format. We need more food television that focuses on environmentally friendly ways of growing and raising.

Getting Green with Slashfood

With St. Patrick's Day coming up tomorrow, it's time to get into the spirit. Open your closet and pull out something green to avoid getting pinched by your friends, then open your fridge and pull out a pint of Guinness. St. Patrick's Day originally began as a Catholic feast day that celebrated the patron saint of Ireland, but millions of Irish and non-Irish revelers now celebrate it every year. Is it the religious signifigance? Perhaps for some, but for many it's about the corned beef and the beer - which is what we like at Slashfood.

Here are some Irish ideas to get you going for St. Patrick's Day:
