How to teach your kids about wine

First Blush Juice

On a recent trip to Whole Foods, I discovered First Blush gourmet grape juices. It comes in four different varieties that map directly to different types of wine: Cabernet, Merlot, Rosé, and Chardonnay. This is the perfect drink for the yuppie in training. If they get to know their grape juices, it's just a small step to becoming a proper wine connoisseur (when they reach legal age, of course). Who knows - the early start might just be the extra edge they need to help them impress their dates and close business deals. Call it the training wheels of the wine industry.

Each variety is 100% juice and so tasty that you may want to drink it along with the kids. I've been mixing mine with some sparkling water to create a light and refreshing "grape fizz".

Grape juices that taste like wine

navarro vineyards juiceLove wine but need to "lay off the slosh sauce" for a bit? You could drink grape juice, especially now since Welch's 100% Concord grape juice has been listed as a top anti-oxidant containing food, but then, you're just drinking grape juice.

Navarro Vineyards, located in the Anderson Valley in coastal Mendocino, has been growing grapes and making wine since 1974, but they also make grape juices from the same grape varietals they use to make wine: Chardonnay, Gewürtztraminer, and Pinot Noir. They started making the juices after their own children wanted to share in the joys of the vineyard.

Bottles are availabel for purchase from their website and cost between $9.75 and $11.00 per bottle.

Mmmmmm...Fresca!

FrescaFresca is really the forgotten soft drink. Up until a few years ago, I wasn't even aware that they still made it, and I'm sort of a soft drink nut. (Side note: do they still make Tab?) But they do still make it, and they've even updated the logo!

It's always been one of my favorite soft drinks. It has a great grapefruit taste, it's low calorie (but doesn't taste it), and is perfect for those hot summer days and nights. Here's a recipe I found. Sounds good to me:

Sparkling Grape Drink

4 cups grape juice, diluted
2 cups of lemonade, diluted
2 cups of Fresca

Combine grape juice and lemonade. Mix well. Add ice cubes. Just before serving, add Fresca. Not sure why the grape juice and lemonade has to be diluted since you're adding so much ice, so I'd try it both ways and see which way tastes better.

Tip of the Day

Drying fruit is easy, mostly hands-off and yields a sweet and healthy snack.
