It's Summertime and I'm in Good Humor

Earlier this week I spent a blistering hot couple of days back in my home town of New York City. It sparked my memory and took me back to when I was five or six years old and the Good Humor Man would drive up our block in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We all thought he was absolutely wonderful! Ringing his bells to announce that it was Good Humor time, jingling and jangling, starting faint off in the distance and slowly getting louder as he got closer. There was always plenty of time to run up the four flights of our Brownstone (the name of the style of four story buildings made of brownstone that were originally one family homes. Many had been carved up into several apartments) to let my mom know that He Was On His Way. Anticipation built as he made his way slowly up the street, stopping two or three times per block and hopping out to serve all the kids, and their parents, as well as uncles, aunts, and the occasional grandparent.

Everyone had their favorites. Mine varied slightly from day to day, depending on the weather or whim. Red, white, and blue Bomb Pops for those blistering hot days, sometimes varied with Italian Ices. lemon was my favorite, but occasionally chocolate, root beer, or watermelon. On days when it was warm, but not hot, I went for the ice cream bars. Chocolate Eclair or Toasted Almond were at the top of my list. My dad liked the Toasted Almond as well, with mom's favorite being Creamsicles. Sometimes she would get several and stash them in the fridge, something she still does to this day, but with a box from the supermarket. My little sister liked Snow Cones because they lasted so long. She would eat half of one and then stick the rest in the freezer for later, sometimes she would have several different types in there, building up for awhile, until mom would chuck them out when they started to disappear under a layer of frost.

Good Humor-Breyers gets on 100-calorie bandwagon

Desserts are officially getting smaller. Just a week ago we found out that Hostess snack cake products were going to be offered in 100 calorie packs, now Good Humor-Breyers are the first ice cream company to offer the reduced calorie portion size to consumers.

Included in their line-up will be Slim-a-Bear Klondike ice cream sandwiches and bars, Breyers Double Churn ice cream cups in both Cookies & Cream and Vanilla Fudge Swirl flavors, and giant-sized Fudgsicle fudge bars, which are already low in fat and calories.

It's getting tough to think of types of snack foods that aren't offered in 100-calorie packs now, but really, that can't be a bad thing. Though the best answer of course is to not eat snack food at all, we have to be just a little realistic. At least this way it's convenient for those who are counting calories, and portion-controlled for those who may have difficulty in saying no to a larger snack item.

Liqueur Notes: Disaronna Originale Amaretto

Disaronna Originale is an amaretto (almond) liqueur with 28%abv / 56 proof, it comes in a bumpy, old fashioned, rectangular bottle. Originally known as Amaretto Di Saronno, the company changed the name to Disaronno Originale a few years ago after there were some copyright issues. The liqueur is made of 17 selected herbs and fruits soaked in apricot kernel oil, and has a beautiful amber color. It is the world's best selling Italian liqueur.

The aroma is first a toasted almond scent, followed by a waft of sweeter marzipan, then a assortment of fruits, with hints of spices and herbs intermingled throughout. The taste is a bitter sweet almond and marzipan base, piled high with a mélange of fruit and spices floating hither and yon. The legend of Disaronno is quite old and involves a pretty inn keeper who models for an artist painting a cathedral, and gives him the gift of what will become amaretto liqueur. It is argued whether Disaronno is the original liqueur that can be traced back to this legend and I will let you decide.
