Food Porn Daily: Chocolate almond cakes

chocolate almond cakes
Valentine's Day is this Thursday and here at Slashfood, we're using it as a reason to write about chocolate, treats and other holiday-appropriate desserts this week. I went digging around in our Flickr pool (come and join us!) to find something that went with the Valentine-theme and came up with these gorgeous Chocolate Almond Cakes created by Anita at Dessert First. The recipe comes from John Scharffenberger and Robert Steinberg's cookbook, Essence of Chocolate and you can find it on her blog here.

Krispy Kreme loves Valentine's

Krispy Kreme is getting into the pink for Valentine's Day. The ever-popular doughnut shop is planning on having a few special offers to celebrate the season of romance. For customers who purchase a dozen doughnuts of any kind between now and Valentine's day, every store will give out a dozen Valentine's Day cards, each of which will contain a coupon for one free doughnut. It will be tough to part with the prospect of free doughnuts if you're a fan of the classic hot glazed, but just think of how appreciative your Valentine's will be!

Stores will also be frying up their light, yeast-raised doughnuts in heart shapes, coating them with white icing and red, white, and pink sprinkles. They're not quite up to the same level of cuteness as the Halloween doughnuts that Krispy Kreme featured back in October, but it's hard to say no to a doughnut with sprinkles

And on February 14th, stores will be making their regular glazed doughnuts in heart shapes, as well.

Update: SoCal Krispy Kreme dispute resolved

A few days ago we mentioned that Krispy Kreme was revoking the licence of its Southern California franchisees, which would cause 28 stores to close. Today, however, Krispy Kreme announced that it had reached an agreement with its franchisee and was reinstating their liscence to operate the stores. The stores had refused to pay royalty or brand fees and contribute to the marketing and advertising fund for the brand. They have been involved in a lawsuit with Krispy Kreme since September of last year, accusing the company of misappropriating franchisee funds and overcharging for equipment and supplies.

As part of the agreement, the franchise has agreed to resume payment of the brand and royalty fees and Krispy Kreme has agreed to resume shipment of ingredients to the stores, which will continue to operate.
