Chicken with a Side of Cash

Southern-style fried chicken, mashed potatoes, a honey butter biscuit and cold, hard cash -- now that's a value meal.

According to Nation's Restaurant News, quick-service chain Church's Chicken is sending CEO Harsha V. Agadi to stores on its home turf in Texas (the chain started in San Antonio in 1952) today to give away thousands of dollars in cash to randomly selected customers.

As part of the chain's "Random Acts of Goodness" campaign, Agadi will surprise the unsuspecting Church's patrons with $1,000 each -- not exactly chicken feed.

Free Friendly's Ice Cream on June 6

happyendingAsk anyone from New England if she remembers Friendly's and she will probably instantly recount an obsession with their Conehead Sundaes (pictured) or gigantic, thick Fribbles (what Yankees call frappes, or milkshakes).

The Barbie-pink color scheme and 80s cursive script invoke many a memory for folks from the region, so we suspect they'll be in line when the chain gives away free one-scoop cones and dishes on Saturday June 6 (between noon and 5 p.m., the prime sugar-crash zone). It's the second freebie-scooping year in a row and one exec reports, "We want to give away as much ice cream as possible."

Done and done. See you in line, buddy.

BakeSpace and KitchenAid Giving Away Appliances

kitchenaid and bakespace appliance giveaway banner
I love my KitchenAid mixer more than is rational or reasonable. Several years ago, a bunch of my friends pooled their money in order to buy it for me and it hasn't left my kitchen counter since it arrived in my apartment. It's an amazingly useful tool. I know other people who are equally attached to their assortment of KitchenAid products.

Knowing just what good tools KitchenAid makes, BakeSpace has teamed up with them during February to give away one appliance a day (that's every day), all month long. If you're interested in entering the contest, the first thing you do is check out the calendar of giveaways, to figure out which prizes you want to try for. You earn the raffle tickets you need to enter by uploading recipes to BakeSpace, or by getting your friends to join the community.

1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes - Cookbook of the Day (Plus Giveaway!)

cover of 1000 gluten-free recipesMore and more people are discovered that they have gluten intolerances these days (and many of them have documented their dietary changes on these here interwebs). A gluten-free lifestyle can be a huge adjustment but there are some good cookbooks out there that can help with the transition. One such cookbook is 1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes, which has become the modern-day Joy of Cooking for gluten-free set.

This book clocks in at nearly 700 pages and has recipes for just about every dish, baked good, sauce and salad that you could possibly want to prepare. It's not a glossy book with pictures of every recipe, instead it strives to provide delicious foods that appeal to everyone (both the gluten-free and the gluten-full).

However, you don't have to be on a gluten-free diet to enjoy this book and so we're giving away two copies of it to two lucky Slashfood readers. To enter, just leave a comment on this post, making sure to include your email (so that we're able to get in touch with you). The deadline for entry is Monday, November 24th at 12 noon.

Free seeds from Dagoba Organic Chocolate

Dagoba's Rosemary Mint bar was one of Marisa's standout picks for our Fancy Food Show Favorites, and I've since become slavishly devoted to their Seeds bar. It's 68% cacao, studded throughout with pumpkin, hemp and sunflower seeds, and now I've got even greater impetus to dig it, because the company is giving away free seeds via their website Seed the Day.

"Whether it's a pot on the windowsill, a patch in the backyard or a big community effort, everyone can garden. We'll get you ready for spring and help keep your garden blooming by sending you the very herbs and flowers found in our chocolate bars. Everyone who signs up will get at least one packet of lavender, mint, rosemary, pumpkin or sunflower seeds."

So far as I can tell, there's not a single hitch or string -- just free seeds and an extra excuse to think of chocolate. The site also notes that should your planting group be planning a late night planting romp, they just might send along some delicious provisions. And - if you live in Boston, Chicago or San Francisco, you can come on out and nab a handful for yourself. Dates are listed here.

Chick-fil-a wants you to dress up like a cow

chick-fil-a's cow imageLast Friday, the u-pick farm I like to frequent was offering a special 4th of July deal. If you were willing to sing the National Anthem, or recite the Pledge of Alligence, they'd give you a free bag of popcorn to take home along with the peaches, blueberries and plums you picked. I was more interested in the apple cider donuts, so I skipped the display of patriotism and paid for my snack.

However, if you're the type who likes to work for your meal and doesn't mind looking a little silly in the pursuit of a good deal, then you might like what Chick-fil-a offering up this Friday. They've declared it to be Cow Appreciation Day and if you dress up like a cow and go to one of their stores, you'll be rewarded with some free food. If you go all out and dress yourself from head to hoof, you'll get a free combo meal. If you just do a partial look, you'll be given a standalone entree. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your costume.

Free T-shirts from Starbucks

Are you a fan of Starbucks? What about Bravo's Project Runway? The coffee giant teamed up with season 3 finalist Mychael Knight to produce some limited edition, customizable coffee t-shirts that are being given away at MyStarbucksShirt.com. The site has an application that allows you to put your favorite drink combination onto a shirt, providing everyone with something that is both very Starbucks and very you.

Before you get too excited, there are a couple of restrictions on this promotion. The giveaway began on February 15th and only lasts until February 28th. A total of only 10,000 t-shirts will be given out, meaning that there is a limited number available every day and they sell out quickly! The best strategy for acquisition is to try to get online as close to 10am PST (1pm eastern) as possible, as that is when the promo "refreshes" every day with a new batch of shirts.

The combo I came up with (pictured) isn't something that I would necessarily order when I go out for coffee, but it makes for a pretty interesting shirt. What will your Starbucks shirt - assuming you are lucky enough to get one - say?

Guardian to include free Super Size Me DVD

According to the Guardian's News Blog, next Saturday's edition of the paper will come with a DVD copy of Morgan Spurlock's fast-food-bashing documentary Super Size Me. The DVD giveaway was also mentioned in a recent Guardian article about Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser and the alleged "crisis management" responses from McDonald's concerning Schlosser's upcoming children's book Chew On This and a film adaptation of Fast Food Nation. The Guardian blog post asks readers to send in their recommendations healthy fast food options in Britain.

Tip of the Day

Drying fruit is easy, mostly hands-off and yields a sweet and healthy snack.
