"gift list" news and stories

What's on your Christmas list?

Except for Santa (and other gift-bringers), no one knows exactly what will be waiting under the Christmas tree tomorrow morning. I'm not one to want to ruin the surprise, so I don't shake boxes, trying to guess what is in each package, before they are ready to be opened. Instead, I'd rather think about some of the great gifts I got in previous years (as well as family, friends, world peace, etc.) and hope that this year will be similarly successful.

What are some of your kitchen highlights from past Christmases? And what are you hoping to find under the tree this year? Anything kitchen or cooking related is always welcome as far as I'm concerned, but a few new baking books wouldn't hurt, nor would some flavored salts, fancy vanilla extracts or other specialty ingredients. Last year, I really enjoyed my aebelskiver pan, a specialty pan for making little Danish pancakes, and a selection of coffee from Terroir.

Food & Wine's gift ideas

It's unlikely that you're going to find all the gifts that you want to give on one list in the same way that you're unlikely to find everything all at one store (with the possible exception of Amazon.com), so it's in your best interest to look at as many sources as you can for inspiration. Food & Wine's 40 Divine Gifts list definitely has some inspired choices on it. Their choices run from under $25 up to $250, so they've tried to cover every budget in addition to picking a wide variety of foods, kitchen tools and decorative items. On the low-end of their gifting spectrum, they recommend the Cool Jewels ice tray, which pops out ice shaped like giant gems and is great for making a splash at parties, the cookbook Cooking Up A Storm for culinarily inclined kids and the Life of the Snowman sugar dispenser. The higher end includes Emeril's Deep Fryer and gold-plated serving spoons.

Friday Happy Hour - fanciest gifts of booze this holiday

In a feature in the business section of the Oregonian today about the popularity of high-end spirits, the writer of the story suggested that one's Christmas list might include "A bottle of Bushmills 16-year Single Malt for the boss." Other gifts so popular they've been stripped from the shelves in OLCC stores: Kahlua coffee liqueur, McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt whiskey and Hennessey VS cognac. For the lush in cash as well as liquor, Hardy Perfection Cognac Air or Courvoisier L'Esprit sell for around $5 or $6K each (in Oregon, one bottle of the Hardy and 15 of the Courvoisier have been sold in the past year).

While I've never given a gift of spirits, I can see the appeal. It's luxurious, it's thoughtful, and a gift of good liqueur can really show off your expensive tastes. Problematic, though, is the commodity characteristic: there's one price for liquor in most states, so everyone will know exactly what you spent. Local bartenders suggest Shakers Rye vodka, William LaRue Weller uncut, unfiltered bourbon and Hangar One Fraster River Raspberry vodka. My husband's buddy, who's in a pirate band (??), recommends the Sailor Jerry's rum pictured. What do you recommend for spirited gifts this year?
