A Michigan couple who got up early one mid-October morning to prepare special food for a sick dog got more than they bargained for. Tim and Marty Hoffman told Today that they were going about the sorts of chores most couples routinely pursue as the sun comes up when Tim -- who was in the bathroom at the time -- heard his wife scream bloody murder from the kitchen, where she was getting food ready for their dog Zoey, who needs a special diet due to allergies.

An East Texas man claims he found a fragment of a rat's jawbone in a package of frozen vegetables he bought at Walmart.

Ben Leonard of White Oak, Texas, told KLTV-TV that his wife found the fragment in a package of Walmart's Great Value brand frozen mixed vegetables. The family ate the vegetables before they figured out the fragment was likely a rat's jaw.

"She thought it was a big chunk of corn cob or something and the further I got into it the more I thought, 'Oh no, this is rat's jaw!'" Leonard told KLTV.

Leonard said he reported his find to the local Walmart, where the vegetables were purchased, and he told KLTV they directed him to the manufacturer. Walmart did not respond to Slashfood's request for comment.

In an e-mail, Leonard told Slashfood the company held a conference call with him when he first reported his discovery, then immediately turned contact over to their insurance company.

"They did not ask to examine what I had. I told them I was willing for anyone to examine the small chunk of bone but I was not going to send it any where," he wrote.

I would hate to find a rat in anything I purchased. That seems like the worst kind of surprise ever. Unfortunately, that's what awaited one consumer in Korea upon opening a bag of frozen mixed vegetables.

The person contacted and filed a complaint with the Korean Food and Drug Administration after purchasing the frozen veggies from a Costco there. The Korean unit of the company acted quickly to recall all Willow Wind Organic Mixed Vegetables, which were imported from California. Of course Costco suspended sales of the product, as well.

The thought of a rat in anything that I've bought is not a pleasant one. I know that some things just happen, but I'd like to think that a rodent would be caught before it got into a product. I know we've seen a lot of product recalls lately, so don't you thing that manufacturers would work a little harder to keep foreign objects out of their products? What do you think?
