"frog" news and stories

Is that a frog in your lettuce or are you just happy to see me?

frogWe've heard those stories of spiders being found in imported grapes, but this one is new to me.

A woman in Brooklyn, NY was startled when a frog jumped out of her organic lettuce. That's right, not only was there a frog in a head of lettuce the woman bought at the Park Slope Food Coop, it was actually alive, surviving the trip from Florida to New York.

As you can see from the pic, it wasn't a big frog like you'd find in a swamp or lake, but still, must have been freaky.

Marzipan frogs for your Valentine

Marzipan is a confection with a long history, as it is one of the oldest sweets that is still in the repertoire of modern pastry-makers. Even if you really love marzipan, you're probably not going to want to shell out $32 for this set of three adorably sculpted marzipan frogs from Dean and Deluca. If your Valentine loves marzipan on the other hand, you may want to rethink that position. This hand-sculpted set would make an awfully cute - and tasty - gift for a marzipan-loving significant other.

Available from Dean and Deluca, the amphibious trio weighs in at just 1.5-ounces. They were carefully crafted by Rebecca Russell, an award-winning New York based pastry artist who specializes in creating miniature figurines for wedding cakes, displays and, as in this case, gifts.

They will be hard to eat - not because the sugary almond paste itself is so hard, but simply because they are so cute!

Food Porn: marinated frog from Dragonfly in SF

marinated frog

I love food, but I will admit that I am not a hugely adventurous eater. I love to watch the likes of Tony Bourdain travel to faraway places and eat things like, oh, cobra hearts, but i doubt that I'd be able to stomach it myself. In fact, I can hardly stand to think about some of the foods of my own cultural cuisine, Korean.

Frogs aren't considered all that adventurous, and yet, I doubt I could have eaten it, as Reid of Ono Kine Grindz did on a recent trip from his home in Hawaii to San Francisco. The restaurant is Dragonfly, a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant that he read about. He hasn't written any notes about what it tasted like yet, but the picture makes them look, at least to me, pretty damn good.
