Feast Your Eyes: Black bean tostadas

black bean tostadas
My very favorite Mexican restaurant here in Philadelphia is a little storefront on Washington Ave., tucked between an Vietnamese nail salon and a private rowhouse called Plaza Garibaldi. They make the most amazing tostadas that are crunchy, savory, fresh, bright and delightfully greasy, all at once. I've never found their equal anywhere else. However, seeing this picture from food blogger Nicole, I'm beginning to think that there might just be tostada deliciousness beyond the bounds of Garibaldi's four walls.

Thanks Nicole, for adding your picture to the Slashfood Flickr pool.

Make your own chicken nuggets

homemade chicken nuggets
When I was a kid, once in a very great while, my dad would take my sister and me to McDonald's. My mother was not much of a fan of fast food and didn't particularly approve of these outings, but we loved them and always looked forward to them. I would always get Chicken McNuggets with a little container of honey for dipping. It was total nirvana for me. As I've gotten older, I've given up my McDonald's habit (except for the two cheeseburgers I ate two days in a row last spring. I don't know what came over me) but part of me still misses those juicy, greasy McNuggets.

However, thanks to the folks at YumSugar, I don't have to pine away any longer. On Monday, they linked to a post over at For the Love of Food in which they make homemade Chicken McNuggets (following the instructions from this video). I am totally enamored (and I'm not someone who fries things often). I do believe I see these in my future.

Food Porn: BLT Steak 'Sandwich'

Though you could easily serve this for dinner, any "sandwich" that includes bacon, lettuce, and tomato automatically makes me think lunch. Either way, this twist on an old standard is enough to make me want to thaw out a steak and fire up the grill at noon hour.

Made without bread of any kind, this BLT Steak sandwich prepared by myamii at For the Love of Food is definitely friendly to those of you who are avoiding carbs but still want a flavorful, hearty meal.
