How to Devein Shrimp - Foodie Flicks

Back away from those tiny-shrimp platters! I don't know why, but every time someone throws a party, they pick up those rings of mini shrimp as if it's gourmet and delicious. Not only are those shrimp too tiny to enjoy, but they also offer barely a fraction of the taste of the freshly prepared, larger variety.

So, to help get you off the crappy shrimp ring bandwagon, I give you: How to Devein Shrimp. It's easy. It's quick. It just requires a short amount of time to get rid of the shell and devein, and a quick saute to cook. (Talk about an easy saute -- the shrimp turn pink when they're done, so there's absolutely no guesswork.) I swear -- it's better to have less shrimp and mouth-watering flavor than those little things with crappy flavor -- save those for your shrimp salad.

Food Video Finds: Vegan French Onion Soup

I am far from a vegan, and I'm inclined to agree with anyone who says that French Onion Soup isn't French Onion Soup without the rich, tasty meat flavor. That being said, I'm immensely intrigued by a new foodie video that's popped up over on YouTube, which you can see above.

Unlike many FOS recipes that use Brandy, this variety uses rum, and then a collection of ingredients that sound like they could make for a tasty, albeit different experience. Granted, there's no way I'd not add cheese to the mix (and some good, crusty bread), but this sounds like it could be quite tasty -- and something I'll try in the near future.

I also like the style of the video. The soup is very simple, so the entire prep is shown on fast-forward, with overlayed text. Enjoy!

Funny Food Videos and Cupcake Rap

We may have covered most of the "best of 2005" lists, with topics from MMMM to NNNNN, but funny food videos is one we missed. Fortunately, Saute Wednesday didn't miss this important topic in their slightly belated Best of 2005 List. They picked out a Flambe Disaster! clip, which really shows the value of having a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, in addition to being funny. Incidentally, the apartment kitchen in which it takes place looks shockingly like my college apartment. I kept my extinguisher under the sink, guys!

The best clip of the year was definitely from an episode of Saturday Night Live, where they paid tribute to Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes in the most highly esteemed of media: a rap song.

But first, my hunger pangs are sticking like duct tape
Let's hit up magnolia and mack on some cupcakes
No doubt, that bakery's got all the bomb frosting.
I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling
2 no 6 no 12, bakers dozen!
I told you that I'm crazy for these cupcakes, cousin!

Update: The YouTube video (above) was removed, but you can hear the song here.
