New Haven, Conn.'s world standing has been pretty much solidified since 1701 with the founding of Yale University. Its food reputation took a little longer: 1900 Louis' Lunch (arguably) invented the hamburger, and in 1925 the first of the iconic thin-crust New Haven pizzerias -- Pepe's -- opened.
In the last couple of decades New Haven has emerged as a street food mecca to rival cities many times its diminutive 124,000 size. There is a daily assemblage of dozens and dozens of food carts that represent a veritable culinary United Nations.
Choices include Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Malaysian, Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, Moroccan, Ethiopian, Mexican, Latino, Italian and you can still find a stray cheesesteak, hot dog or French fries.
