Who says it's fall? Eat a Tropical Cake

It is autumn. The days are shorter, the nights are longer. The air is cooler. The leaves are turning all shades of yellow, orange and red. And do you want to know What We're Eating? A cake from the Tropics! It doesn't make sense, but somewhere on this planet, it is sunshine-y and warm, and a decadent homemade coconut cake filled with layer-upon-layer of luscious whipped cream and fresh pineapple, mangoes and kiwi, then covered with pretty toasted coconut is perfect!

Food Porn: Pesto, Artichoke, Prosciutto and Asiago Panini

artichoke and pesto panini
Sandwich Day has been over and long past, but I couldn't resist this gorgeous panini from food blog Cream Puffs in Venice. Usually, I like the idea of paninis, but find that because they are squashed down in a panini press, don't look quite as fabulously photogenic as thick sandwiches that are piled high with ingredients. Perhaps it's the fact that the photo is an extreme close-up, perhaps it's the angle and lighting, but this panini made with pesto, artichokes, prosciutto and Asiago cheese definitely looks voluptuous enough!

Food Porn: Caramel Apple Cupcakes

caramel apple cupcake

The thermometer may be showing 85 degrees outside, but the calendar says September - which means it's almost autumn! Gone are berries, stone fruits and melons of summer, and now come...apples!

These Caramel Apple Cupcakes from the Cupcake Blog (fka Chockylit's Cupcake Bakeshop) are just in time to herald the change in seasons, despite what the weather actually feels like. The cupcake itself is flavored with Granny Smith apples and spices. There's a cream cheese filling under the cupcake's dome, and each cupcake is frosted with a thick caramel. Fabulous for fall!

The full recipe for the cupcakes appears in Four Weeks Magazine.

Food Photography and creating edible Food Photos with food styling

That is the title of a great article from blogger, celebrity TV chef and photographer Benjamin Christie.

He opens with "most of us don't have the time to go to great lengths to create the perfect shot, so here are a few ideas, tips and more on how you can achieve your perfect food photo" which about sums up the post - he covers the equipment he uses and the reasons why, the three types of food photography (Close in (food only) and all in focus, Close in with limited depth of field and Table setting elements providing character and a reference situation). Each has a great photograph as an illustration.

He concludes with a few hints in regards to lighting. Worth a read for all budding foodporn image takers.

Behind the Lens - I Speak Film interviews MattBites

One of the many Digital Photography Blogs, in this case I Speak Film, has published a nice interview with Matt Armendariz. Who is he? He is the highly talented chap behind the Matt Bites blog that many know.

I first ran across his blog after he designed a logo for Does My Blog Look Good In This (foodporn photo competition) and was captivated by the high quality of the photographs that adorn his site. Reading the interview, it became clear why the photos are so good - Matt is a professional photographer. Working at his home studio in the Los Angeles area and on location, Matt has created images for companies such as Whole Foods and Bristol Farms.

The article is worth reading for all the tips and advice that Matt imparts.
