"fire hazard" news and stories

Another espresso machine recall

Last month I posted about the recall of the Krups Orchestro Espresso Maker due to a fire hazard involving eroded electrical connectors. This week, a similar recall was issued on the Capresso C1000 Automatic Coffee Center, made by the same manufacturer, Eugster/Frismag, of Switzerland. As with the Krups model, the electrical connectors on the Capresso machine are prone to eroding and causing fires. Four fires have been reported so far, none with injuries, according to a release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The CPSC estimates that there are roughly 28,000 machines affected by this recall.

Espresso machine recall

Krups recently issued a voluntary recall for two different models of the Orchestro Espresso Maker. Apparently the electrical connectors on the machines are prone to eroding, making them fire hazards. The model numbers are 890-41 (right) and 889-45. According to the recall statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are about 2,100 of the machines in circulation and no injuries have been reported. The machines are produced in Switzerland by Eugster/Frismag. Krups will offer free repairs via their recall site. Apparently, the machines have been on the market for about six years and retail for around $850. That's a lot of scratch to have a coffeepot go up in flames.
