Don't be a loner, celebrate National Eat Dinner Together Week

paint splattered blue tableUntil I hit high school, my family ate dinner together nearly every night. I'm talking TV off, table set, glasses of milk, hands held for a moment of silence, dinner. I feel really lucky to have grown up with such a foundation of family meals and someday when I have kids, I hope to give them the same experience.

Both studies and common sense tell us that eating communally it good for us, so someone out there went and declared this week (September 16-22) National Eat Dinner Together Week. Sponsored by the National Pork Board (who oddly situated it in the middle of the Jewish High Holidays*) it is a good reminder to clear off the table, make a pot of soup, a roasted chicken or a stop at your local prepared foods market and sit down with your friends and family.

*The Jewish side of my family is highly secular. They don't think twice about eating pork products most of the year, but even they try to avoid them during the High Holidays. Seems like an odd choice on the part of the Pork Board.

Slashfood Ate (8): Books to Cook for Kids

Books to Cook for Kids
There's an entire library of books out there to help busy parents cook for their families, who are faced not only with the problem of time, but also health. Some of them focus strictly on lunches, other on a whole days of foods from breakfast to school lunches, to snacks, and dinner. These are just a few I've come across that look helpful:

So what's in your fridge?

The Boston Globe has a new interactive feature at their site, where they take a look inside the refrigerators of several local residents. They take a look into the fridges of college students, couples, and couples with several kids. There's also a fridge used by three adults that live together.

I think this is a great idea, though I don't think the Globe went far enough with it (and the fridge used by the single person isn't used by a single person at all, it's used by roommates). But the feature just seems to be a shot of the fridge, then buttons you roll over to see certain items. So we see beer and fat free cheese and meals, but I'm not sure what we're supposed to get out of it besides that, and it gets kinda boring.

Though I gotta say I really want that giant fridge owned by the family in Waban. Mine is 15 years old and falling apart. If you're wondering what's in mine, it's mostly Diet Coke, Perdue chicken, and Dove dark chocolate.

Ford puts toys back in cereal boxes

For years and years, the best thing about eating cold cereal in the morning was the fact that toys came in the boxes. They were tiny and cheap, but they were free and that is all that matters when kids are concerned. As sponsors moved their toys to happy meals and cereal companies began cutting costs, the free cereal toys became fewer and farther between. To delight of kids everywhere, and probably more than a few adults, Ford is reviving the tradition of toys in cereal boxes by putting 600,000 Ford Fusion Hot Wheels into boxes of Kellogg's cereal sold at Target stores. No cutting bar codes or collection box tops necessary.

Ford is, of course, trying to promote its mid-sized Fusion by appealing to families with kids. The cereals that have the cars will be Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes and Cocoa Krispies, all likely to be consumed by cartoon-watching children on Saturday morning, but the parents will be the ones reading the boxes and learning more about the car. At least, that's what Ford is hoping. The rest of us are just hoping that other companies follow suit.

I need some new x-ray specs.

20 Questions with a Slashfoodie: Heather Craven

You've been reading our ramblings here at Slashfood for months now, so isn't it about time you get to know us? Over the next few weeks, we'll be playing 20 questions with our Slashfood bloggers, just so you can see what kind of insanity is cooking in our brains. And kitchens. heather cravenDo you have a personal blog? 
I do. It mostly chronicles my daily ramblings about my three children and my skills, or sometimes the lack of, parenting them.

What is your day job, or rather, what do you do when you're not food blogging?
I chase my toddler, try to find matching socks for my brood and figure out healthy food choices for us all.

How long have you been blogging with slashfood and what is your favorite post?
I am spanking new on Slashfood. I have been toiling away on The Life Sciences blog since late 2005.

Do you have any non-food-related, non-blogging hobbies?
I live in the mountains of Colorado so we have a fairly active outdoor life. I love to mountain bike, hike and ski. I also love to paint and read.

Not every foodie does, but do you cook?
Not very successfully. I like to accessorize. I can decorate a mean table, make children's food look spectacular and bake fun goodies.

What is your most prized utensil/gadget in the kitchen?
I have a lovely new red tea kettle. Its happy presence has prompted me to buy a red toaster oven and I am pondering the purchase of a red garbage can to round out the color splash.
