Halloween may now be over, but so many of the fall foods we associate with the holiday are still perfectly appropriate up through the end of November (when we shift into December, I figure it's time to surrender the pumpkins and apples). This means that just because you didn't manage to make a batch of caramel apples before October expired, doesn't mean that you have to wait another year to do so.
It is pumpkin time! I've got a couple of edible beauties positioned around my apartment at the moment, looking pretty until I find the time to chop them up, roast them and whirl them down into some versatile puree. If you've got a similar "problem," consider making these Pumpkin Pecan Chocolate Chunk cookies. While they often say that less is more, I think when it comes to these cookies, more is just more.
Thanks Bakerella, for adding these yummy treats to the Slashfood Flickr pool.
It just occurred to me that I've never had a pie that has more than one fruit in it. I've had dozens (if not a hundred) apple pies over the years, blueberry pie, cherry pie (not a big fan), and pies filled with other foods such as custard and pecan. But I've never had a pie that combined two fruits before.
But I plan on making this one, courtesy of Martha Stewart, the Autumn Harvest Pie. It has three fruits in it: apples, pears, and cranberries. The cranberries worry me a little bit. I'm thinking they might overwhelm the flavors of the apples and the pears, but I'm going to give this a shot. Full recipe after the jump.
Mmmm...apples. They remind me so much of fall (even though they're available year-round). It hasn't been very fall-like this week in my neck of the woods - it was almost 90 yesterday! - but any recipe that gets me in the mind-set for autumn is something I have to post about.
It's from the Cooking For 2 blog and it's a recipe for Fried Apples. Pretty easy, actually. I'm not really a fan of hot apple pie (I prefer ice cold apple pie), but I'm willing to give this a shot. Full recipe after the jump.
The only experience I have with apple dumplings is the 1975 Don Knotts/Tim Conway Disney comedy The Apple Dumpling Gang. I haven't seen the movie in 30 years, but I believed it involved orphans and prospecting for gold? There was also a sequel, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, which I've never seen. But I digress...
It's National Apple Dumpling Day. This site has a recipe for what they call "the world's best apple dumplings." Here's another recipe from mealsmatter.org, and here's one from southernfood.about.com.
Sure, I love the fresh fruits and vegetables of summer, and there is nothing like a bright, crisp salad on a sunny day. But we have come into autumn, and the foods of fall sing out to us with steamy soups, hearty stews, and other rich, saucy dishes. While we certainly don't want to deprive ourselves, we still want to be mindful of all that work we did over summer to stay trim, fit and healthy. Forbes has listed some of fall's most fattening foods with their approximate calorie content, what we should watch out for, and about how long we have to sweat it out on the bike to burn off that second helping of stuffing.
Despite what the thermometer might be reading outside (it's as warm as July here in LA!), fall officially arrived over the weekend. The Autumnal Equinox was on September 22 at 9 pm PST. Though we might still be clinging to those late "summer" tomatoes and trying to figure out what to do with all that zucchini, some folks are zoomin ahead in the kitchen with autumn-inspired dishes. Here are some of our favorites from around the blogosphere:
There's nothing like a stack of waffles smothered in a spicy pear sauce, topped with maple whipped cream, drizzled with maple syrup and sprinkled with sugar to warm up on a chilly fall morning.
