Kitchen Diagrams from Girls Can Tell

kicthen diagram towels
I have a weakness for whimsical and unique kitchen items. Over the years, this had led me to deck my kitchen out in goodies from thrift stores and flea markets, all in the pursuit of an original, useful and expressive space. The latest addition I made to my cozy turquoise kitchen are the hand-printed towels you see above.

Made by Philly-based artist Sara Selepouchin, these towels are fun and so much more lovely than my standard flour sack towels. These dish towels represent just a fraction of her offerings (you can find her as girls can tell on Etsy), she also prints a number of different diagrams on coasters, notebooks, napkins and tote bags. She's currently going through a wonderfully creative period, in which she's posting a new diagram (sadly, they aren't all kitchen related) to her shop every week.

If you're looking for a gift for the cook who has everything, definitely swing by girls can tell to check out all of Sara's fantastic designs.

Etsy Funk for Foodies

Rubber stand mixer stamp

The other night, I decided to peruse Etsy in search for recipe cards that appeal to my foodie fanaticism. Of course, I was once again out of luck, but I did find some other great foodie pieces I had to share.
  • Stand Mixer Hand Carved Rubber Stamp -- I just love this little thing, pictured above. It's wonderfully simplistic, but can also come personalized so that all of your foodie correspondences can have your stand mixer stamp. It also comes with a recipe card template.
  • Fork Easel -- These are ideal for holding your recipes, notes, business cards, or even place cards at the table. All are made with old and varied forks, so it's also a classy way to reuse tossed items.
  • "This doesn't taste like crap:" Recipe Cards -- They're not what I'm looking for to fill my own recipe box, but these suckers never fail to make me laugh every time I look for them. They're perfect for cheap and unique gifts for your spunky and unconventional cooks.

A Handmade Honey Pot

A cute honey pot
A couple of weeks ago, I found myself deeply exasperated by my honey storage situation. I typically buy my honey from these folks at Reading Terminal Market, and just store it in the jar it came in. The problem is that over time, the jar's threads get sticky with honey, making it a monumental struggle to get the lid off and on each time I want a spoonful for tea or a dab for toast.

The other night I plum fed up with the honey jar (and that's saying a lot, as I LOVE jars). I pointed my browser at Etsy and searched for honey pots (feeling very much like Winnie the Pooh). I found a number of fun, quirky and lovely options, settling on the pot you see above (the red nob spoke to me). It was made by a potter named Barbara Dunshee who's based in Seattle. She has a number of other whimsical honey pots, sugar bowls and serving pieces, if you're in the market for such things.

The honey pot arrived yesterday and it's absolutely fantastic. It holds about eight ounces of honey and makes adding a few drops to my tea a simple proposition.

How do you store your honey?

Fun Aprons for the Food Loving Cook

composite of three food-themed aprons
While I've never been much of an apron wearer while cooking (although I keep thinking I should become one, as I end up staining my clothes more often than I'd like to admit), I've always liked the idea of them. These charming, food-themed aprons from Etsy seller Snappy Shop would make great gifts for food lovers in your life who are also fans of the unique and handmade. In addition to the designs you see above, there are several other foodie options in the shop.

Vegan Etsy opens up a whole new world of baked goods

vegan baked goods

Surely you already know of Etsy, the ebay for the crafty and craft-loving alike. But perhaps you've yet to hear of Vegan Etsy, the blog of a group of Etsy users whose online shops consist solely of vegan items.

The blog primarily features fun interviews with Etsy shop owners, whose products consist of about half baked goods and half vegan accessories (which are just as fun to peruse). There are also plenty of links to the shops, where you can buy vegan goodies to your heart's content. A sampling: blueberry muffins, lemony-glazed raspberry turnovers, pumpkin spice cupcakes...is your mouth watering yet?

In addition to being an awesome place to find new buyers and sellers, you can pick up some great tips from the Vegan Etsy crowd, like new recipes, helpful vegan websites, and gorgeous flickr pages. You can't really go wrong.

Hippest food packaging-cum-accessories

In this age of recycling, what's a trendy, cola-drinking gal to do when she finishes off her carbonated beverage of choice?

Why, make it into a necklace, of course! All the cool kids are turning their food and drink packaging into something lasting and eco-friendly: jewelry and accessories that are surprisingly fashionable and wearable, in that quirky, I-just-polished-off-a-Kit-Kat sort of way.

Here are some of coolest accessories made from food we could find. Here's hoping the designers rinsed them out first.
