Though the thought of a cracked-egg cocktail may turn some stomachs, eggnog is a beloved tradition, embraced by Americans and Brits alike. While the creamy quaff has achieved ubiquity during the holiday season, it was initially limited only to the wealthy, who could afford ample milk and eggs, spiked with brandy or sherry, and used as a toast to good health.
Today's eggnog hasn't changed much from the initial versions, relying upon some sort of cream, beaten eggs, liquor, sugar and nutmeg. If you don't already have a coveted family recipe, we recommend the flavorful New York Times recipe for Butterscotch Scotch Eggnog -- "made smoky and rich with Scotch and brown sugar," it'll surely be embraced by decades to come.
