Padma Lakshmi Indie Rocker

"Top Chef" may be in full swing, but its cohost, Padma Lakshmi, continues to diversify.

The model-actress-cook stars in a new video for the Eels' "That Look You Give That Guy." Band member Mark Oliver Everett told Slashfood's sister site, Spinner, that "I always dreamt of dating someone as beautiful as Padma Lakshmi. I should probably just go back to dreaming."

The video shows a date between the two with the sometimes burger eater feeding Everett's dog, Bobby Jr., and hawking her cookbook. Product placement brought to you by ~~the Glad family of~~ Padma.

Chowder Wars

Up and coming chef Ben Sargent had just been given his very own half hour Food Network TV show--all about him and chowder, his specialty. With the sun barely up one morning in May, cameras followed him around the Fulton Fish Market. He stocked up on monkfish, live eels, and giant clams that looked like tubular aliens. The work was scrutinizing, but the last day on camera promised to be easy: a Brooklyn waterfront party where he cooked and his friends gnoshed. Like the cameras weren't even there.

The day arrived. Sargent happily and somewhat drunkenly prepared his chowder. He looked up, and Bobby Flay stood in the audience--the fiery haired Iron Chef, no less. Suddenly, Flay was on him, shaking his hand and challenging him to a chowder cook-off, right then and there.

This wasn't Sargent's show at all. This was Food Network's Throwdown with Bobby Flay and he'd just been had.

Ely's Eel Day

Ely's Eel Day Want a chance to taste smoked and jellied eels? Or maybe more conventional food such as s hog roast is more your bag?

The Ely (its a small city just north east of Cambridge) Eel Day this year is on the 29th April. It will be eels all the way with displays from the Environmental Agency and Ely Perspective Riverside Group as well as information and artefacts from the art of eel catching. I also hear there will be a special beer brewed for the occassion as a one-off!

If the thought of an eel throwing competition is more a kids event and not for serious adults (swing that eel baby!) then Ely’s Boathouse Restaurant, beside the river, is offering a variety of eel dishes on the menu throughout the weekend.
