DMBLGiT: May Winners

The results are in for May's edition of DMBLGiT (Does My Blog Look Good in This) and two very deserving winners are sharing first place.

Jaden of Steamy Kitchen submitted her gorgeous Tropical Island Salmon, pictured above. Seasoned, slow-cooked salmon served on a bed of sliced orange and onions, finished with fresh herbs and a razor-thin slice of orange for garnish.

And, Anita of Married ...with dinner shared first place honors with her beautiful submission of Spring-Green Soup (pictured, right) which includes a fresh dollop of lemon crème fraiche and droplets of chive oil. She finished her presentation with an edible flower, which compliments the soup beautifully.

The full list of winners for each category including Edibility, Originality, and Aesthetics can be found at RealEpicurean.com. Congratulations to all the winners!

Does My Blog Look Good in This - All that and a bag of chips

fer food bag of chips
Every month, snap-happy food bloggers pile together their favorite food photos for judging in Does My Blog Look Good in This? For the month of April, Cook & Eat was the blog that hosted the "competition," and last week, with the decision of the judges, Cook & Eat announced the winners from the incredible pool of entrants. There are, as always, three regular categories - originality, edibility, and aesthetics - and this time around, they also chose a couple of photos for Best Use of Color and Best Dish Name. The overall winner for April was a Bag of Chips by Fer Food, pictured above. Head over to Cook & Eat to see the whole gorgeous gallery of photos.

Does My Blog Look Good in This? March winners

We've been a bit remiss in keeping up with all the blogging events of late. We completely forgot to mention the roundup of the latest Sugar High Friday entries, from the Sweet Seduction-themed round hosted at Confessions of a Cardamom Addict! Fortunately, we are getting back on track now and are pleased to point out that the latest results from the Does My Blog Look Good in This? contest have been announced. The international food blogging/food porn competition asks bloggers to submit their best photos from the previous month of posts. Once submitted, a panel of bloggers votes to determine the winners. Fancy Toast hosted this month's round, where the overall winner was the above photo of a chocolate mousse trio from French food blog Blanc d'Oeuf.

Note that if you don't speak French, there is an English approximation of the recipe ("white in snow" = egg whites, FYI), but take care to read it well before starting to avoid getting hung up in translation error.

October's DMBLGiT food porn

Hot on the heels of September's winning Does my blog look good in this? photos, we have the results from the October round of the food blogging photo competition. This time around, the contest was hosted by Emma, a.k.a. The Laughing Gastronome, a New Zealand-based food blogger. As usual, several awards were given out. The winner of the Aesthetics category was a photo of Chili Powder from the Homesick Texan. Pomegranate and peach sorbets in mini meringue baskets took the prize for Originality, while the luscious Caramel Apple Cake from Culinary Concoctions took the top Edibility spot. The overall winner was the picture above of Dan Dan Noodles, snapped by Jenny of The Omnivorous Egg. The noodles are a traditional Sichuan dish and, if you want to give them a try, the recipe is here.

Congratulations to all the winners. We can't wait until the next round comes up and we can see what food bloggers from all over have been cooking up in the last month.

September DMBLGIT winners

It seems that this month there was a first for the Does My Blog Look Good in This? food blogger photography competition: a tie! This round was hosted by Katherine, from Toast Point, and after getting a look at the entries, it is easy to see why judging was so difficult. Every photo looked like a winner. The photo above is a Matcha Opera Cake from Anita, at Dessert First, with its lovely layers of green tea genoise, chocolate ganache, and green tea buttercream. It tied with the Roasted Tomato, Red Onion and Arugula Tart from Bea at La Tartine Gourmande. In addition to the top two, there were winners in several additional categories. Becks and Posh had the "most original" entry with her photo of "Alien Tomato, Pregnant with Strawberry" and Peabody's Texas Big Hair Tarts captured everyone's fancy as the "most edible." Last but not least was the "most aesthetically pleasing" photo of financiers from From Our Kitchen.

Food porn Competition - the next round

The wonderful Fanny is hosting the next round of my favourite blogging event - Does My Blog Look Good In This.

Fanny writes at Foodbeam, a lovely blog I recommend you go visit, and has all the details of how to enter in a recent post. She has set up a flickr group to host all the entries (each host is free to deal with the mass of submissions as they see fit; some set up galleries on their blog for example) .

Cakes and desserts are always popular entries in this competition - and several are already displayed. One I particularly like is entry 9 a passion fruit cake, oh and have a look at the creativity behind entry 16, shame the photo is a little blurred. My entry is not a dessert, though but my sausage and peppadew salad picture (shown here). As this round is hosted on flickr you can easily leave comments against each entry.

Food Porn: Strawberry Pie

This summery strawberry pie is one of the entries in this month's Does My Blog Look Good in This? photography competition (as are a couple other pictures that have been featured as food porn here). The pie is from Rachael, at Fresh Approach Cooking, and is an absolutely fantastic way to put fresh berries to good use. There are two tricks to making a pie with summer berries: (1) double bake the crust so it has a chance to firm up and (2) use a thick crust. No matter how much sugar you add to gel the berries together, good ones always create a juicy filling and the thicker the crust, the more of it will stay crisp and flakey. It will also be able to support the individual slices of pie, rather than falling apart on your plate. The pie will still taste good if it falls apart and, as a tip to file away for serving, a generous scoop of whipped cream will hide a multitude of sins.

Update: Bonus pie photo - the uncut version - after the jump!

The July Round of Does My Blog Look Good In This

The July round of every food bloggers favourite food porn competition - Does My Blog Look Good In This - has just closed. This months edition is hosted by Helen on her Grab Your Fork Blog.

She has done an excellent job in collating the 63 entires from across the world. Nip over and have a look at some mouthwatering images. There is Sicilian olives and smoked almonds by Passionate Cook, the Tartine di cioccolata con ciliegie or Small Chocolate Tarts with Cherries by Lucillian Delights and the Loose Berry Tart with Puff Pastry and Zabaglione by Bunnie Pie just for starters.

What is so great about this comp is that if you spot something delicious you can follow the links and get the recipe.

Blog Events for July

Despite the general summer slow down across the internet here are four blog-events to follow or to participate in.

  • Mixology Monday V takes place at Jiggle the Handle on July 17th. The subject is Lemon - plenty of fun to be had discovering or inventing a cocktail!
  • Sugar High Friday storms through to the 21st edition and a theme of "Ice Ice Baby" (chilled and frozen desserts).
  • The 12th edition of Blog Party - Passport Party!  traveling...virtually, of course. Think about the places you've been, countries you've visited. Or, a country you're hoping to get to. Create at least one appetizer and drink inspired by your favorite place, or places.
  • Everyone's favourite food porn competition, Does My Blog Look Good In This, already has several wonderful entries. Send your picture or just view the entries at Grab Your Fork.

The image is my entry for DMBLGIT... what do you think?

Fairy Cakes and other DMBLGiT winners

Hopefully, you had a chance to take a look at the gallery of entries for this past month's Does my blog look good in this? photography contest. If so, you'll know that the competition was very tough. Judges spend many grueling (drooling?) hours scrutinizing and rating the pictures before the scores were calculated and the winners were determined. We actually featured the winning entry here at Slashfood weeks before it was entered!

 The overall winners were:
1. Baked Strawberry Pudding
2.
Cinnamon Sugar Beignets
3.
Blueberry Tarts with Lemon Cream
4.
Beet Risotto with Fresh Garlic and Fava Beans
5.
Spirale di filo ai Pistacchi

Pictured: Fairly Easy Fairy Cakes (the recipient of the viewer's choice award)

Another tempting food porn gallery

Usually, Andrew puts up a post announcing the entries in the monthly food blog photography competition, Does My Blog Look Good in This? I happen to be in charge of this month's event, though, so I get the honors. All of the entries are simply gorgeous. You can view them here, in the official gallery. The judges for the event will pick a winner at the end of the month, but please leave comments on your favorite photos to give the bloggers some feedback and let the judges know who you think should win. Not that they'll be swayed in their judicial responsibilities, of course, but it certainly can't hurt!

If you have your own food blog and would like to participate, read the submission guidelines. There is still plenty of time to enter.

Food Porn : DMBLGIT competition winners

Aussie based Tomatom has just posted the results from the hotly contested Does My Blog Look Good In This photo competition. Ignoring the fact that two winning entries came from the same person (the rules state just one entry per person/blog per month) the standard of entries was really great for this round. Ed has posted a spreadsheet of the results with comments from the two judges - Terry Durack (restaurant reviewer for The Independent on Sunday in London and European editor of Gourmet Traveller) and Jill Dupleix (The Times cook in London).

The winning photo really is excellent, I hope you agree. It was entered by Lucullian Delights. The next round, now accepting entries, is being hosted by Nika's Culinaria.

Food Porn: Blogger Photo Challenge

My favourite food blogging event - Does My Blog Look Good In This - is a monthly food porn photography challenge. The winners for the 14th round have been announced by the Cooking Diva. The picutre here is the winning image - great isnt it! It is by Marcela in Argentina.

Just one point separated this image from the second place winner while two points separated the first place and the third place winner (which was my cheese image; shame I thought for sure I was gonna win - sob). Winners described here while all entrants can be viewed here. The next round is to be hosted by Tomatom in Australia who is having a gastro-fling around Vietnam at the moment but is sure to announce it soon.

Food Porn Competition DMBLGIT

Now this is a real tough one. Who agrees that the standard of the latest round of the food pron extravaganza Does My Blog Look Good In This has reached a staggering level of quality.

I thought I was assured a top place with my cheese snap but then it is up against Johannas' Cinnamon Meringues, Fiordizucca's Matcha tagliatelle with tomatoes, tofu and soy sauce and the Kitchen Mage's Mud Puffs. And that is just three from the array of excellent pictures. The results should be announced on Cooking Diva, for it is the lovely Melissa who is hosting this round, on Monday. It's going to be close.

Food Porn Champion

Murukulu and Tea

I have just posted the winning photographs for the monthly food porn photography competition, Does My Blog Look Good In This, over on my spittoonextra blog. The photo here is the winning entry and I am sure you will agree that it is a superb image; great lighting and superb colours - a worthy winner.

Congratulations to Mahanandi with the excellent Murukulu and Tea. Thanks too to the judges - Nick and Nicole from Slashfood, Jeanne Cooksister and Johanna the Passionate Cook. One of the judges stated that it is a "Great shot. Love the shapes, the colours and especially the lighting." My thought though was that perhaps, there is just a little too much empty space to top right and not enough at the bottom. Apart from that - ain't it great!?

Tip of the Day

December may have peppermint bark, but have you thought to incorporate the taste of autumn into white chocolate with a rich pumpkin swirl?
