That's a surprise: a diamond falls out of a cracker

Up close photo of some wheat crackers.Well here's something that doesn't happen every day. A British woman, Kim Stead, bit into a cracker (called biscuits in England), and a diamond fell out. Of course she was really excited about it at first, but quickly came to the conclusion that it probably wasn't worth that much.

The diamond was pretty small and had probably fallen out of a jewelry setting. She did notify the cracker company, McVitie, who at first suggested that it might be crystallized sugar. Once Mrs. Stead assured them it was a diamond, McVitie sent a package for her to return to them so they could start an investigation.

No word on if Mrs. Stead has returned the diamond yet or any results. What would you do if you found something like that in your food?

Diamond-studded Christmas cake

Around this time last year, a department store in Japan offered up a million dollar cake. This year's cake at the Takashimaya department store in Osaka is not quite as pricey, but is still nothing to sneeze at. The 14-inch high cake is studded with about 100 diamonds totaling 50 carats. The cake itself has a square chocolate base and a chocolate sculpture of some kind on top that makes it look like a showpiece - which, of course, it is.

The cake is priced at $848,600 or 100 million yen, but a spokesperson for the store said that the value of all the diamonds on the cake is much higher than its price tag. She also suggested that "it would be ideal if a man were to buy it as a present for his wife."

The cake has been on display for at least a few days now and will remain up through Christmas, even if it is sold before then.

Russian woman finds wedding ring in candy bar

An elderly Russian woman almost lost a tooth when she bit into her favorite candy bar last week. But it wasn't an errant bit of walnut shell that she found inside the chocolate-coated treat, it was a diamond wedding ring.

At first Elena Otpushchennikova thought she had won a prize from the local candy factory. After finding out that no such contest existed she decided to track down the owner of the gold ring. She quickly concluded that the ring must have slipped off someone's finger while the candy was being made. Rather than publicly announce that she found it she went to the factory to find the owner.

Soon after learning that one of the women there was a newlywed she was giving the ring back to Tatiana. It seems that Tatiana, who'd been married for only two weeks, brought the ring to work to show off to her co-workers. For some reason the whole incident sounds like fodder for a Russian version of I Love Lucy.

Diamond-studded Easter egg

Over at Luxist, they reported that La Maison du Chocolate has put together one of the world's most expensive Easter eggs. Priced at £50,000 (about $87,000), the 2-foot tall egg is made of chocolate that was imported from France and is entirely covered with 100 half-carat diamonds. On the inside, the egg has a peach, apricot and praline filling, and it is interesting to note that the egg - less the diamonds, of course - is completely edible. The egg is on display at La Maison du Chocolate in London.

Tip of the Day

Drying fruit is easy, mostly hands-off and yields a sweet and healthy snack.
