Deep-fry maestro Abel Gonzales may one day try to conquer what's widely considered the Everest, the four-minute mile and the 56-game hitting streak of fair food: tossed salad. But in the meantime, he's contenting himself with deep-fried butter.
Gonzales, who has twice won top honors in the State Fair of Texas'annual contest for best new midway food, is back this year with deep-fried butter, a dish that's drawing gasps from even the most hard-arteried eaters. The snack will go up against fried peanut-butter-cup macaroons, deep-fried peaches and cream, fried stuffed peppers and fried pork chips with gravy for the Big Tex crown this Monday.
If you thought deep-frying Coca Cola was crazy, think again. And if you thought it was only Texas that will deep-fry anything, think again, again. Adam of Slice NY visits the Atliantic ChipShop in Brooklyn New York to get a taste of deep-fried pizza. According to Adam, the deep-fried pizzas "taste like a combination of a pizza roll and a mozzarella stick," but however he describes it, it only sounds...delicious. The photo here is fabulous, of course, but if you still want more, head over to Slice to take a peek at their video.
Fried chicken. Funnel cakes. Doughnuts. If you ever thought deep-fried foods could never be sexy, think again. This is a picture of fish and chips as taken by The Girl Who Ate Everything. She is currently making her way through various parts of Europe on vacation, but these fish and chips are from Chip Shop in New York (obviously - I can't imagine they'd serve fish and chips with Ranch dressing in England). What can I say? It's not just food porn, this baby is sexy. Maybe it's the lighting. Maybe it's the way the French fries (chips) are tumbling all over each other. Maybe it's the naughty pose of the deep-fried fish on the edge of the plate.
In a lot of areas around the US, late August and early September are State Fair season, and while we're sure that there other exciting activities going on all over the fairgrounds, we Slashfoodies pretty much just care about the food.
Same is true for Belly du Jour, who made a trip to the Minnesota State Fair and created the first-ever (we think) video catalog of all the fair foods on a stick, the third and final episode of thier series on fair foods. Sure, we've seen corn dogs, kebabs, and even desserts like a wedge of cheesecake on a stick, but who knew you could eat macaroni and cheese or spaghetti on a stick? Don't worry, not everything is artery-clogging - I think I saw some fruit in there somewhere.
The video log is after the jump, and in full filmmaker style, Belly du Jour even has their outtakes!
