Food Porn: Homemade Oreo Cookies

Nosheteria was craving some Oreo cookies and happened to stumble upon Wayne Harley Brachman's cookbook Retro Desserts, which contains a recipe for homemade Oreo cookies. I happen to love my copy of his cookbook and have made homemade graham crackers and other goodies on many occasions. I have not tried these chocolate sandwich cookies, but I definitely will now. Nosheteria says that the cookies taste surprisingly similar to - if not better than - the original Oreos. They are crisp, with just the right amount of delicious vanilla cream filling. I recommend picking up a copy of the book, but the recipe is posted online, too.

Food Porn: Cream Filled Muffincakes

The primary distinction between a muffin and a cupcake is frosting. A muffin has none and a cupcake is topped with gobs of it. So, what do you get when there is frosting inside the muffin/cupcake? A muffincake, of course! Morning Coffee and Afternoon Tea seems to have coined the term with a recipe for Irish Cream Filled Muffincakes. The rich chocolate cakes are made with a combination of butter and cream cheese, which brings an extra level of decadence to the cake itself. Once baked, a cavity was carved into the fluffy base and filled with an Irish Cream-spiked whipped cream cheese filling and topped with a cherry.

Since it has the word "muffin" in the name, does that mean I can still eat it for breakfast?

Vegan Twinkies

I mentioned Vegan Lunchbox a few weeks ago as a really worthwhile blog. If the idea of an everyday lunch doesn't intrigue you, though, perhaps a vegan Twinkie will. That's right: vegan Twinkies. Even Sarah has been won over to the concept of vegan baked-goods after her vegan cupcake, so why not a Twinkie?

Twinkies are one of the most famous and popular snack cakes in America, a moist sponge-type cake filled with a gooey, fluffy cream. The vegan version is not "health food" by any means, but they are fresh, delicious and dead ringers for packaged Twinkies in looks, though probably better in taste. They start with a white cake batter, baked in a shaped pan, and are filled with a trans-fat free version of cream filling. I think that they look fantastic. The recipe will be available for a limited time, so go ahead and print out a copy if you want to try it. I know that I will, just as soon as I can get my hands on a Twinkie pan.
