"cracker" news and stories

"Puttin' on the Ritz" wins Ben & Jerry's flavor contest

Clearly, the "flavor experts" at Ben & Jerry's are not Slashfood readers because if they were, they would know that everyone wanted either Italian Renaissance or Wackie Chan to win the new flavor contest. It was one of our most commented-on posts of all time because just about everyone likes ice cream and we don't get the chance to design a really fantastic new flavor every day. We'll have to wait until a future round comes up for our next shot at Wackie Chan because Puttin' on the Ritz is the new flavor.

The ice cream is vanilla based with swirls of caramel and Ritz crackers, studded with chunks of chocolate-covered, caramel-filled Ritz cracker sandwiches. It's safe to say that the "cracker swirls" are made from crushed crackers, though how they'll stay crunchy in the ice cream is anyone's guess.

As it turns out, in a twist that wasn't clear before, the company is only going to make the flavor available to the Florida woman who invented it and her family and friends for the time being. Whether the rest of us will even get to taste the concoction remains to be seen.

Clack egg cracker

Ever since I caught one of the Iron Chefs using a gadget like this on TV, I wanted one. The Clack Egg Cracker is a device that allows you to crack off one end of an egg-shell in a perfect circle. It gets its name from the loud "clack" it makes as it works. As you might imagine, it makes peeling boiled eggs significantly easier.

The show I first saw this on was one of the original Iron Chef episodes, not Iron Chef America, and the chef sliced a perfect circle of shell from a raw egg, not a boiled one, before using the empty shell as a serving dish. I tried to do the same thing myself, but a tool like this one would have done it in a fraction of the time. Granted, it may not be the most practical device, especially if your main purpose is to make Iron Chef-style serving dishes, but it's certainly a conversation piece. Priced at about $20, I might just be willing to invest for coolness alone.

Irish oatcakes

Irish steel cut oats, like McCann's, make oatmeal that is out of this world, but they are also very versatile. The oats can be used in savory applications, like oat risotto, as well as sweet ones. McCann's has a recipe on their website for a variation on oat cakes that use steel cut oats. Oat cakes are flat biscuits or crackers that are made with oats. They are fairly plain on their own, but the flavor of the oats and the crunch of the biscuit make them pair perfectly with cheese and other spreads. They're a great addition to a cracker tray when serving appetizers or for snack food at any time.
