Cow Tales are a candy made by Goetze. They are long, thin rolls of caramel filled with a vanilla cream. The caramel is chewy, but neither as sticky or sweet as you might expect caramel to be, while the cream is a bit pasty, rather like frosting, and dissolves instantly in your mouth. The combination of the two textures is really delicious, not to mention addictive.
Cow Tales, though they seem a bit old-fashioned, were actually first introduced in 1992. According to the company, the name comes from the fact that the candy "was intended to be fun and exciting to eat" - a statement that actually explains nothing about why they're called "cow tales" instead of "cow tails." One of the great mysteries, it seems...
They're a little hard to find in stores these days, but are readily available online, as are two newer flavors: strawberry and chocolate.
