Where the ladies lunch in Westport

Zest's host deskI found myself in Westport, Connecticut and wanted to check out Chef Pietro Scotti's hot lunch place, Zest.

Chef Pietro Scotti of the famous Da Pietro's opened Zest in 2006 to cater to Westport's casual crowd, or at least the fine dining crowd when they don't feel like getting dressed up.

The first thing I noticed as I stepped down the stairs into their intimate dining room was the fresh, fanciful decor. One wall was entirely covered by a mural of stylized foliage, perhaps inspired by Sir John Tenniel's Alice in Wonderland illustrations. The feel was modern, without the harsh edges of minimalism. The clientele was mostly lunching ladies, and I spotted one very well-behaved child. Yes, there is a kids' menu.

Principal suspended over birthday cake

A homemade birthday cake.
I'm pretty confused about this one. An elementary school principal in Connecticut has been suspended because of a birthday cake? Well, I guess it was the argument he got into with a parent trying to deliver it to his child's class.

The parent was trying to take a homemade birthday cake to his kids class. Apparently that was against school policy, and when the principal tried to explain that the parent "protested". I am not sure exactly what happened, but it was enough that the suspension may lead to firing for the principal.

Birthday cake is supposed to bring happiness, not aggression. Both of the people involved should be ashamed that they brought negativity to such a happy thing. What so you think about this?

Connecticut moves to ban soda in schools

Connecticut's state senate has voted to ban the sale of sodas in schools and the governor has said that she supports and will sign the legislation. The ban would prohibit schools from stocking anything other than low-fat, nonfat, soy and rice milks and 100% fruit and vegetable juices in their vending machines. There would be an exception that could allow sodas, diet sodas and sports drinks, like Gatorade, to be sold at school events, such as football games.

The idea behind the legislation is, of course, to try an promote healthier choices among students while decreasing childhood obesity and Connecticut joins several other states, including California, in passing such legislation.
