Reusable, compostable plates by Verterra

I've come to the point in my eco-consciousness where I cringe whenever I see paper or styrofoam plates in use. I can't stop thinking about the fact that once the meal is over, those plates will be tossed aside, to be entombed in a landfill for years to come. However, I'll be the first to admit that on many occasions, disposable plates are the best and only option.

Thanks to Verterra, you now have another option when shopping for single-use dinnerware. Made of compressed, fallen leaves and water, these plates are both reusable and compostable. They are sturdy enough to stand up to the soupiest of sauces and can even go into the oven (making it possible for you to make up a plate of food for a latecomer and tuck it into the oven to keep warm). Verterra also makes serving platters, meaning that the sum totally of your Thankgiving dinner clean-up could be a trek out to the compost bin (minus the meat).

I've had several of these plates now since August and I've used them in a number of different ways and have washed them repeatedly. They've gained a bit of character over the last few months, but have lost none of their utility. At approximately $1 a piece, they're a little pricier than traditional disposable options, but I believe that the expense is worth the environmental peace of mind that these plates deliver.
