Humor You Can Swallow

Photo: YouTube

Food and comedy have long been intertwined, heralding as far back as the 1800's when audiences would throw rotten tomatoes at a disappointing performer. Rather than dodging last week's produce, today's comedians use food as ammunition of their own, and crowds are eating it up.

So what is it about grub that makes us giggle? Jill Wendholt Silva of KansasCity.com suggests it's because we all share a common thread -- eating -- so we feel in on the joke.

What Spirits Should You Never Bring to a Party?

Jagermeister in the snow. Photo: janeyesee, Flickr
Our counterparts over at AOL U.K. recently ran an article entitled "Comedy Booze" lamenting the unfortunate habit some guests have of using parties to re-gift hard alcohol they found unfit to stomach back when they received it. From Greek ouzo to French pastis, it's a multi-culti takedown.

Of course, sometimes that famous Brit wit doesn't cross the pond. We know some folks who adore pastis, and others for whom a bottle of Jagermeister might be considered quite a smashing (or quite funny) addition to a party.

That said, we can certainly sympathize with the sentiment. After the jump, three things we think you should never bring to a party. Tell us what we missed!

Lewis Black Rants About Milk

NSFW: This is standup, therefore, beware of foul language.

Here's a laugh to get us through the hump day.

As much as we can all rant, there's nothing quite like the fuming fury of a funny man. Above, you can check out a 10-minute sketch of Lewis Black ranting about the world of milk and the commodification of water, from Black on Broadway. It may be long, but its got enough laughs to make it feel like just a moment.

We're talking the kind of rant where the subject drives you crazy with aggravation, until it boils up into your eyes and makes you suffer short convulsive fits (as Black does while mentioning acidophilus, and sending me to tears). It's wickedly funny, both for Black's treatment of the matter, and its common sense.

Sour death balls

Most sour candy seems to be marketed at kids and I'm willing to wager that at elementary schools around the country, perhaps around the world, kids still have contests to see who can out-sour their friends by eating extremely sour candies. I never went in for the sour candies because, to be honest, they don't usually taste very good. The overpowering sourness gives way to an almost burning sensation and you wonder if you are ever going to regain the use of your tastebuds even after you have spit the candy out. But they're fun to eat, right? Isn't that why people subject themselves to them in the first place? I have no idea, but I can say that the people eating the sour candies in the Sour Death Balls video, where they seem to be trying to keep the candies in their mouths as long as possible, above don't exactly look like they're enjoying every moment of the experience. For us viewers, on the other hand, the faces they make are pretty funny, though.

Real life pizza-crepe-taco-pancake-chili bag

Sarah may have wanted to attempt the Taco Town Pizza-Crepe-Taco-Pancake-Chili Bag that was made famous in a memorable SNL sketch, but it looks like someone beat her to it. Over at a guy named Drew’s MySpace blog, he and his friends documented their entire process of making the “taco” for Drew’s birthday. Layer upon layer was stacked up, pinned together, dipped in batter and deep fried. Since they didn’t need to take it “to-go,” they skipped the past step of trying to put it in a bag in favor of simply digging it. It actually looks like it wasn’t bad, though the guys don’t look like they felt all that well afterward.

The original SNL sketch is after the jump.
