For Domino's Pizza, Chicken is the Next Big Thing

By now you're probably all familiar with Domino's "Pizza Turnaround" commercials. The documentary-style ads bend over backwards to convince consumers that yes, the company knows their pizza wasn't great, but things have changed. Evidently Domino's feels they've made thier point, so they're turning their attention to a new frontier: chicken. A new ad campaign launches next week, featuring a chicken chef named Tate and a new line of boneless chicken and chicken wings, reports Nation's Restaurant News.

Hooters Valentine: A Wing, Not a Ring

In what seems like a cruel trick intended to lure a certain breed of romantically inept male to relationship doom, Hooters is touting itself as the perfect Valentine's Day destination. The tagline for the overly buxom restaurant chain's V-Day promotion? "Forget the ring and bring her in for wings."

Aww...just what every lucky lady wants to hear on the most romantic day of the year. Who needs a Hallmark card, chocolate and flowers when you can give her a plate of 20 wings for the price of 10 and a side of...well, you know what.

The Chicken "Wyngz" Controversy

DiGiorno's pizza and wyngzPhoto: DiGiorno

How do you disguise the fact that your chicken wings aren't wings at all? Just change the spelling from "wings" to "wyngz" and the government won't mind a bit. Stephen Colbert went after DiGiorno's "Pizza and Boneless Wyngz" combos during a "Thought for Food" segment on his show, "The Colbert Report," earlier this week, accusing the company of using the bizarre spelling to cover up the fact that the chicken wasn't wing meat. Turns out he was right. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service posted about it: "The FSIS allows the use of the term 'wyngz' to denote a product that is in the shape of a wing or a bite-size appetizer type product under the following conditions." Conditions? Here are just a few: The poultry has to be white chicken, the product can't contain any wing meat, and no other misspellings are permitted. Yeah, one horrible misspelling is probably enough in this case.

Jay-Z's Chicken Joint

Jay-Z's in a "Hot Wing State of Mind," according to our sister site TMZ. No, it has nothing to do with wife Beyoncé. The hip-hop mogul has partnered with his mom, Gloria, and sister Andrea to invest in a downtown Brooklyn chicken joint, Buffalo Boss, co-owned by his cousin Jamar White.

On the menu, wings are divided into sections for "Heaven" (mild flavors like Teriaki and Honey BBQ) and "Hell," which includes the OMG (Oh My God), F.I.T.H. (Fire in the Hole), and N'Sinerator, which actually could be the new title of a Jay-Z song. Just a thought. I mean, he did "Brooklyn's Finest" already.

According to an MTV story, investing in a chicken restaurant may be a strange choice for Jay-Z, who grew up poor and once told Oprah Winfrey when he was a guest on her show, "We ate a lot of chicken, you know, because chicken's cheap," he said. "We had so much chicken - chicken backs, chicken everything ... to this day, I can only eat small pieces or else I feel funny."

But when it's family, Jay, you do the right thing. Check out this TMZ video feature on Jay-Z's Buffalo Boss for more on the deal and menu.
