Happy National Cheese Pizza Day!

Once the default pizza for picky kid eaters, cheese pizza has again become a highly sought-after dish among foodie circles. Gourmet pizza shops are increasingly eschewing salty proteins for an array of fresh imported or housemade Italian cheeses. Attributed with the best pizza of New York by the New York Times, pizza mecca Motorino serves a quattro formaggi pizza oozing with gorgonzola, taleggio, provolone and fior di latte as one of its menu's high sellers.

The pizza first popularized in the U.S. was an idea imported by soldiers returning from World War II duty in Italy and strictly had a tomato sauce base, mozzarella cheese and a smattering of meat and vegetable toppings. Do you like your pizza covered in toppings or are you happy with cheese pizza? Cast your vote!

Food Porn: Caponata Pizza, with Eggplant, Tomato and Onions

Stephen, at Stephen Cooks, really outdid himself with the photo of Caponata Pizza, with Eggplant, Tomato and Onions. Caponata is a traditional Italian dish of eggplant stew, served on toasted crostini. This variation puts the same flavors onto a pizza. The pizza looks like it is perfectly cooked and the extreme close-up of the slice captures the melting cheese and eggplant topping, as well as the sprinkling of toasty pinenuts and parsley garnish. Could it be pizza perfection? That is hard to say, since there are so many different types of pizza out there. But, from the look of it, even a dyed-in-the-wool pepperoni fan would be tempted to take a bite (or two) of this pie.

Fat free pizza?

To dieters, one of the most-missed foods in their life is pizza. A pizza is filled with fat and carbs, in addition to flavor. Pizza is something best avoided entirely, especially since a serving is often only a slice. Even most "individual sized" pizzas contain two to four servings. But dieters everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief because there is a fat free pizza.

Yes, you read that right.

A company in Ohio called Pizza Free has been making fat free pizzas since 1991. Each of their 7-inch plain cheese pizzas (which can be topped with anything you like) contains a mere 212 calories, is low in carbohydrates and is made with real dairy cheese, not a substitute, that they somehow remove the fat from. Not surprisingly, the process is their secret, but it seems to be working. They've been recommended by Hungry Girl, Men's Health Magazine, USA Today and other publications and have a page where you can compare their nutritional statistics to other pizza brands.

Compared to the prices for individual frozen pizzas at the market, these aren't too expensive, especially since shipping is included, though you do have to buy them 6 at a time. Before I make the investment, has anyone tried these? Are they worth it?
