"charm city cakes" news and stories

The Ace of Cakes to become an action figure

chef Duff Goldman as a minimateYou know Duff Goldman as the owner of Charm City Cakes and the central character in the Food Network's reality show, Ace of Cakes. I have a friend who has something of a crush on him and often says that she'd like to "put him in her pocket." Well, today is apparently her lucky day, as Charm City Cakes has teamed up with Diamond Select Toys to turn Duff into a very pocket-sized action figure. That's right Charm City Cakes fans, you can now have your very own Duff doll.

In addition to the doll, you can also buy an assortment of accessories, including "two of the shop's signature cakes, a drill-powered mixer, a chainsaw, wooden spoon, spatula, guitar and flame-thrower! Also included is an alternate baseball cap to recreate another Duff Goldman look!"

They're available this fall and would make the perfect holiday gift for the Duff Goldman fan.

Cakes so amazing they'd be hard to cut into

a cake decorated with faux vegetarian sushi
I have a co-worker that has the ability to find some of the most amazing cakes on the internet. Knowing that have an unhealthy obsession with anything edible, he is nice enough to send links to those cakes in my direction on a near-daily basis.

The cake you see above is another creation of Zoe Lukas (the woman who was also responsible for the Robert Indiana cookies, the Battlestar Galactica cake and the patriotic wedding cake). She has was charged with making a sushi-themed cake and so came up with a spiced carrot ginger cake with cream cheese icing. She topped the whole thing with fondant and used it as a "serving platter" for her tasty veggie sushi. Coconut stands in for the rice in the pieces and rolls, and she even made pickled ginger out of colored fondant.

After the jump we've got a cake decorated to look like Tom Selleck, as well as another sculpted to replicate the Millennium Falcon (made by the folks at Charm City Cakes, so you know it has got to be good).

Win a week with Duff Goldman

Though I don't watch a lot of television, I'm a big fan of the show Ace of Cakes. If you've never seen it, it's like reality TV mixed with extreme baking. Owner and pastry chef Duff Goldman runs Charm City Cakes in Baltimore along with his team of friends/co-workers, and as I found out over at WellFed.net, you now have a chance to win a one-week internship on location courtesy of Jane Magazine and the Food Network. The winner will also write a recap of their adventures with Duff and his crew, to be published in a future edition of Jane.

If you are interested in entering, you can do so on their website until February 26th. Previous baking skills are not required, the winner will be chosen by random draw on March 1st. The winner will receive round-trip airfare, spending money, accommodation and car rental, valued at approximately $4650. Some restrictions do apply though, so I'd recommend checking out their official sweepstakes rules if you are interested in participating.
