A smorgasboard of healthy delivery options

If you're hungry and willing to fork over the cash, there are plenty of companies that will be willing to deliver you a meal. MSNBC recently noted a few companies that are now bringing their goods right to your front door (or, in some cases, your kid's school).

  • For $100, California-based RAWvolution will send you a box filled with two soups, four entrees, four side dishes and two desserts, all - you guessed it - raw and organic.
  • For parents who are way too busy to throw an apple and a pb&j in a paper bag for their kid, they can schedule to have Freshlunches deliver Junior a healthy, organic lunch (about $4-$7 per day), just like mom would make. Except...she didn't. Some company did. Oh, well - guess it's better than Lunchables, right?
  • Three Potato Four will send you a week's worth of food (or so they say), which includes four organic vegetarian entrees, two side dishes, soup, salad, dessert, and bread. Heck, they even throw in some flowers for ambiance!

Now, these options are all well and good, but if you want healthy food delivered to your family, why not join a CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) program, and support your local farms while going easy on transportation emissions in the process? And if you need some company to make your kid's lunch every day, maybe you should re-assess your super-busy schedule, no?

Chocolate-covered cars

Strawberries, marshmallows, caramels and truffles are all things that I like to see covered in chocolate. I am not such a fan of seeing inedible things that are chocolate covered, but perhaps I am in the minority because every year someone seems to put out a chocolate covered car around Valentine's Day. Last year, a white chocolate-covered Fiat was on display in Japan. This year, a Chinese car company completely covered a new VW Beetle in chocolate, added some frosting and candies as decorations, and put it out in front of a grocery store in Qingdao, in the Shandong Province. It was probably the same company that, in 2005, covered another Volkswagon in chocolate and candy (picture after the jump).

Now, if they were chocolate covered Ferraris, I might have to change my mind about the whole chocolate-car thing... although I would still probably just chip off the chocolate to get to the car.

Jones Soda celebrates 10th anniversary

The Jones Soda Company has been tempting soda lovers for ten years with flavors from Root Beer and Strawberry to Fufu Berry and Blue Bubblegum. Their unusual - and unusually realistic - flavors have taken them from a small niche company, to a national brand, with lines of organic drinks, energy drinks, popsicles and candy in addition to their famous sodas.

To celebrate a decade of drinks, Jones has put together a new limited edition soda pack. Unlike the somewhat disturbing holiday pack, this one is a winner with all its flavors. It includes Blue Bubblegum and Green Apple sodas, as well as two of the original hits, Raspberry and Pineapple Upside Down sodas. The drinks come with a numbered, special-edition Hot Wheels "replica of the original black and silver-flamed Jones vans," which the company used for distribution in its early days.

There will probably be collectors out there who will not open the box to preserve it for posterity, but if you do get one, you really should taste the Pineapple Upside Down soda. It's light, tangy and delicious, so it's no wonder that fans have been asking for it to be reinstated for so long.

This pack won't be sold in stores, but is available for purchase online.

An egg cup for men

When was the last time you had a soft-boiled egg? It doesn't seem like the gently cooked eggs are as popular as they once were, but perhaps, using the same techniques that were applied to fast food advertising, they can regain some of their former popularity. What techniques am I referring to? Trying to appeal to men. Of course, there is no soft-boiled egg coalition, but this particular egg cup, Mr. Egg, is designed specifically for men. Clearly based on the idea of a toy car, the metal-cast cup is chrome plated and has tiny, working wheels.

We recommend accessorizing this "ride" with a side of toast, rather than trying to find miniature rims for the wheels, but feel free to add racing stripes to personalize yours.

In-car coffee makers

Even though it is dangerous to drive while eating or drinking, most morning commuters still want to have their coffee on the way to work. Car designers know this, which is why they install cup holders that are easy for the driver to reach. Audi took the idea a step further and designed their concept Roadjet with a fully-functional espresso machine (above left) on the arm rest between the driver and passenger seats. This enables the driver to get his or her caffeine fix without having to pull into a Starbucks, though hopefully they will wait until the car stops before pulling a shot.

One enthusiastic Audi fan couldn't resist making a mod with his own Audi and installed a Capresso 1500 (above right) in the back seat. It is securely tied down to the seat and is powered with an inverter that is mounted on the dash. It's also a bit safer than the Roadjet model because, since the machine is in the back seat, the driver cannot operate the machine while behind the wheel.

Eating while driving doubles crash risk

Have you ever mentally shaken a fist at someone driving recklessly, chatting on his or her cell phone instead of watching the road? Probably. Have you even done that while sipping a shake or eating a snack-sized bag of chips, still sitting in traffic? If so, you were no better off than that other guy.

After extensive testing on car simulators, researchers in England concluded that eating or drinking while driving seriously impairs your reaction time and increases the likelihood of getting into an accident, despite the fact that many drivers actually drive more slowly while eating.

The simulation involved driving through a city environment and, at some point, being confronted with a pedestrian stepping out into the street. 9 out of 10 eating drivers had an accident. Some say that this is proof that eating in the car should be regulated, but if so, will changing the radio station be next?

Your best bet is to drive with your own safety in mind and try to take a sip or two of your coffee while stopped at a red light, not while merging onto the highway.

The expression that "it's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk" is a common one, but have you ever heard of someone baking cookies in their car? A woman in New Hampshire did just that, taking advantage of the extremely high heat that her area had been experiencing. With outdoor temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, the temperature in her RAV4 reached about 200F. She placed trays of prepared dough on her dashboard and went inside to wait with her coworkers for the cookies to be done.

The chef, Sandi Fontaine, has actually been doing these car cookies for about 3 years now, whenever the temperature climbs about 95F. She notes that an additional benefit of in-car baking is that the fresh cookie smell lingers in the car for many days after a batch has been completed.

Step-by-step car engine cooking

Some of you are no doubt familiar with the technique of cooking food on your car's engine while you drive. Perhaps you've even read Manifold Destiny. A great site called Instructables has a step-by-step guide with plenty of annotated photos showing how to make things like marinated chicken breasts, roasted potatoes, ramen noodles and apples with brown sugar. Mileage ranges and speeds are suggested, as is placement on different parts of the engine. The tutorial was posted by a mechanical engineering student who goes by Trebuchet03. He also adds that the striker plate inside your car door can double as a bottle opener in a pinch.

Car wreck blamed on Frosted Flakes

How many times does a journalist get to use "Blame it on Tony the Tiger" as their lede? A Florida man, distracted by the bowl of Frosted Flakes he was eating, recently drove his 1999 Toyota Tacoma into the car of a local police officer. Luckily, no one was injured. The accident did cause a reported $5,000 worth of damage to both vehicles, according to the St. Pete Times. "They were in a bowl, but they were dry," a spokesman for the local sheriff's department told the Times, adding "I think the fortunate thing is nobody was really hurt so we can talk about the Frosted Flakes.''

Where has your pizza been?

It is likely that many pizza delivery people have second jobs. It is possible that some of those second jobs are in funeral homes. And the number of people who are delivery people with second jobs in funeral homes and who think it is acceptable to transport pizzas in the same car as a corpse is exactly one.

A Domino's delivery driver in Pennsylvania, who also happened to be driving with a suspended license, was pulled over for failing to have an inspection sticker on his bumper. The officer noticed that there was a stretcher in the back of the 1993 Buick, whereupon the driver explained his second job was transporting corpses. This does not violate any health ordinances in that county (though perhaps it should), despite the fact that the pizzas were sitting by the stretcher amidst "rubbish and wet clothing."

I don't live in Pennsylvania, but just in case, I'll stick with carry-out. Better yet, maybe I'll go with frozen or homemade.

Fishy car at the Seafood Show

Nika, of Nika's Culinaria, was at the international Boston Seafood Show last month and managed to grab a few shots of the enormous variety of fishy displays that were on display there, including one of the weirdest cars I've ever seen: a catfish car. The car is either the mascot for or an ad for American Pride Seafood's farm-raised catfish. The company has a strong dedication to raising high-quality catfish, but to want to drive it around? French fry fuel powered car

Robert Tomey, a McDonald's franchisee owner, has put his leftover french fry grease to a good use: fueling his car. His stores, he says, produce about 10,000 gallons of excess oil each year and, after having a simple conversion performed on his car, he now has more than enough to get wherever he's going. In fact, Tomey says that 20-30 cars could be powered by that amount of oil. The grease is processed in a way similar to regular diesel fuel.

And Tomey is not the only one who does this. His conversion kit was purchased at Grease Car. Their conversion kits can cost up to approximately $2,000 and their emissions statistics are intended to provide potential consumers with an idea of how they'll be helping the environment if they convert a diesel car to run on vegetable oil. There seem to be many people who have successfully converted their cars, so it is possible we may see even more of them in the future, especially if McDonald's began to recommend this as an option to their franchisees, since it does seem like a great use for leftover grease.

Chocolate Fiat

Why would Fiat cover one of their Cinquecentos in white chocolate? Beats me. What I do know is that it will be on display in Seto, Japan at the Seto-Gura Museum in mid-March. The chocolate-covered Italian ride was a hit at the Aichi Expo last year as well, according to a recent story in the Mianichi Daily News. Apparently the car lives at a museum in Aichi Prefecture for the rest of the year. If anyone knows the story behind this choco-mobile, please share with the group.

Ski trip snacks for your glove box

skiing road tripIf you're heading up into the mountains for a ski trip this winter, you are going to need some supplies. Clearly skis, coats and hats are in order, but what about the really important things, like food? Driving up those long, icy mountain roads isn't fun and, unless you have to stop to put chains on your tires, you really want to minimize the time you spend out of your car before you either get to your hotel or out to the ski lodge. A supply of snacks in your glove box is just what you need to get you through those long drives.

  • Packaged snacks with a long shelf life, like granola bars or snack bars, are nice to have around. They offer a balance of sweet and healthy, in addition to being satisfying.
