Jelly Belly gets ready for Easter

Easter is a candy lover's dream, and Jelly Belly has certainly risen to the occasion. Cybele, the candy goddess at Candy Blog, just reviewed the "Deluxe Easter Mix" which contains an assortment of pastel Jelly Bellys, bunny corn, mellocremes, gummi eggs and malted chocolate eggs. Retail price is $4.99 for a 9oz. bag, and though she managed to source a package for much less, she rated the item at 6/10 on her infamous candy scale.

If you are looking for a mixture of gifts, Jelly Belly offers pre-made Easter baskets including "The Ideal Easter Basket" ($50) which contains almost three pounds of assorted candy, as well as "The Cute Little Easter Bundle" ($34.99) which is about half the size but has a lot of variety. (Though for $35, I would really hope so.)

By ordering either of those on their website, you can expect to get some freebies along with your baskets - which may help to ease the pain of spending that much money on candy in the first place. In addition, the "Fruit Fantasy Basket", as pictured above, sells for $39.99, but comes free with any order of $250 or more.

Malaysian Cappuccino KitKat

Never let it be said that I'm not jealous of Cybele over at Candy Blog. Not that I envy whatever dental issues that may arise from her chosen avocation. Of course, I could be wrong, perhaps she brushes early and often and enjoys all the sweets she samples with nary a cavity.

In any case, I think it's way cool that Candy Blog reviewed a Malaysian KitKat. And not just any run-of-the-mill Malaysian KitKat, but KitKat Limited Edition XI - Cappuccino Flavour. Who am I kidding, I've never even heard of Malay KitKats, but I'm really curious to know what the previous 10 tasted like.

As for Cappucino KitKat, Cybele says it has an aroma of maple and yogurt, not coffee. It doesn't taste like cappucino either. She says it's more like a flan. Either way, I'm still jealous!

Lava Bar: a melted chocolate bar?

I saw Candy Blog's review of The Original Lava Bar, "the world's first liquid chocolate bar," and it just seemed too odd not to pass along. Basically, this is a pouch of corn syrup, chocolate liquor, butter and sugar, among other things. Cybele likens it to "very, very good brownie batter." That was enough to make me want to steer clear of it, but she goes on to give it a decent review, saying that while slurping it out of the pouch was a little odd, the stuff did well on things like pretzels and almonds. Still, she says, it doesn't satisfy like real chocolate. I also find it a little odd that the Lava Bar site bills it as a "no-mess" chocolate bar. It looks a little messy. I guess this is the opposite of those chocolate bars that won't melt.

Limited edition candies: hot or not?

The limited edition Kit Kats released in the UK resulted in consumer overstimulation and, in the US, too, consumers are seeing more and more limited editions on the shelves. Some of them seem to be only limited in their packaging, not the actual product.

Candybloggers Cybele, from CandyBlog, and Brian, from Candy Addict, were interviewed in a piece in the New York Times magazine that asked "what is the point of these releases?" The companies don't seem like they're asking consumers if they want to see them as part of the "regular" line-up, but there are so many limited edition candies on store shelves that they don't seem all that special anymore.

Personally, I don't mind seeing a new product every time I go into the store, but it can be annoying if a new favorite is never seen again after only a short run. There is no way for us, the consumers, to tell if this trend will continue or not - but do we want it to?
