"campbell soup" news and stories

Campbell's In the Soup with Activists

Who does Campbell's Soup turn to when it needs products certified Halal for sale in Canada? The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), which is responsible for making sure the product meets the conditions of Islamic law (it uses no pork and byproducts, the animals are properly slaughtered, it does not contain alcohol, contains no carnivorous animals or birds of prey, and is not contaminated with any of the former).

According to an ABC News story, conservative blogger Pamela Geller (she of the Ground Zero Islamic center opposition) has led a boycott of Campbell's products, claiming that the ISNA has been affiliated with terrorist groups. Yet Campbell has been assured by the State Department that ISNA is, according to a Campbell spokesman, "a reputable organization."

SpaghettiOs to Cut Salt

SpaghettiOs are getting a makeover.

Campbell Soup Company announced that it's cutting the sodium in its SpaghettiOs canned pasta products by up to 35 percent in an effort to make the dishes healthier for kids.

"Changing the recipe of SpaghettiOs comes on the heels of reducing sodium in our condensed kids soups to healthy levels. It's also consistent with our commitment to advertise only sound food choices to children."

The announcement comes a week after General Mills announced it will cut the amount of sugar in its cereals marketed to kids 12 and under, including Lucky Charms and Trix.

Midnight Molded Food - Consomme tongue treat

From Cooking with Soup (1968), A Campbell's Cookbook

I'm interrupting the semi-regularly scheduled Midnight Sausage series to share molded food images and recipes from my personal collection of early-to-mid 20th century cookbooks. There will be aspic. There will be mousse. There will be various gelatins. All will be semi-solid and of debatable degrees of edibility.

Please feel free to shimmy and shake your way to the comments section to share your very own magical, masticable molds of yore.
