Who Dares to Eat the Suicide Stack?

Are you brave enough (or is it insane enough?) to dig in to an Arizona café's 25-pound monster breakfast dish dubbed the Famous Suicide Stack? Among more than a dozen layers lies enough meat, potatoes, dairy and, well, a few veggies, to topple the entire food pyramid. Our friends at YumSugar found a man reckless enough to place his order, and what he found made his eyes pop. Ours, too.

Visit YumSugar to check out the photo and read all about the Suicide Stack.

Dunkin' Donuts Engineers A Handheld Pancake Breakfast

It's funny how the future plays out: no flying cars yet, but now a pancake breakfast you can pop in your mouth like a bonbon.

Yes, it's time to mark another milestone in the quest of American fast-food science to render utensils as obsolete as the abacus and the telegraph: Dunkin' Donuts has unveiled Pancake Bites. As the company describes them in its press release, these "portable, bite-sized sausage links wrapped in a maple-flavored pancake" are just the sort of on-the-go meal that "busy people will flip over."

We're always a little dubious of the claim that people who are so harried that they don't have time to pick up a knife and fork are actually thrilled when they're given yet another excuse not to sit down and take a break already. Nothing seems to scream "I need a vacation!" like sitting in rush-hour traffic with a bag of Pancake Bites in the passenger seat.

In any case, the pint-sized mutant hybrids look remarkably familiar, like hush puppies or mini corn dogs (which is to say that they're a bit homelier than, say, a strawberry-frosted doughnut with sprinkles). They're small, but they pack a punch: a serving of three contains 300 calories and about 20 grams of fat.

And, of course, no story about a product that's intended to be eaten on the run rather than savored would be complete without this classic tag: "Hurry, they're available for a limited time only!"

Creepy breakfast pic of the day

breakfast with eyes

OK, this is just plain freaky. When I sit down to eat a meal, I don't want to see its eyes. It reminds me of that Nightmare on Elm Street movie where Freddy Krueger's body had all those writhing faces of his victims. In this pic, all I can think about is the little cereal pieces screaming "help us!" in a high pitched voice.

Though I can imagine the pancakes singing and dancing in an animated Disney movie.

Happy National Pancake Day!

Banana Cocoa Nib Pancakes

Finally. After a couple of days of food holidays like National Crab Newburg Day and National Cherries Jubilee Day, here's something I can really sink my teeth (and fork) into.

Not that I do that often, actually. The only time I seem to eat pancakes is if I go out for breakfast, which isn't often at all. But it's one of my fall resolutions to change that.

Yes, I make fall resolutions.

Here's a recipe for Blueberry Pancakes and here's one for Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes, both from About.com. CDKitchen has a recipe for Raspberry Chocolate Chip Pancakes, while AllRecipes has one for Dad's Delicious Whole Grain Pancakes. Sarah told us about Banana Cocoa Nib Pancakes, and they look great.

Don't forget the maple syrup!

Bad news for cereal lovers, in so many ways

Love cereal? Well, then you and Jerry Seinfeld may soon be paying a lot more for the stuff (though I'm sure the increased cost won't bother Jerry too much).

Because of unfavorable weather conditions in key areas (who knew one of the places we get our wheat for cereal from was the Black Sea region of the Ukraine??), the cost of wheat is going up, and if those prices continue to be high then companies like Kellogg and General Mills will have to raise prices on their boxes of cereal.

If that wasn't enough bad news? The price of milk is also going up! Milk prices in the U.S. are up 3% this year, and could skyrocket towards the end of the year.
