Friday Happy Hour: Game day cocktail

Generally on game day the beverage of choice around here is beer, but I decided to be a bit more creative this year. After all, you have to have some touchdown shooters, right? You may notice the blue and orange color scheme, strangely reminiscent of a certain team's uniform that is going to take down the title compete in this year's Super Bowl.

These are very simple to make, though for the sake of the picture I dressed them up a little. If you prefer, keep the presentation in mind for a fancier event and just knock these back in a plain old shot glass.

Ingredients:
1/2 oz Blue Curacao
3/4 oz Coconut Rum
1/4 oz lime juice

Put some ice in a martini shaker and add the above ingredients. Shake and strain into glass of your choice. If you would prefer to make a cocktail instead, simply add the ingredients to a glass of pineapple juice on the rocks.

Happy Hour - My Orange Martini is Blue

Last night, while watching the Rose Bowl in a decidedly pro-USC venue, I tried my best to support Texas by ordering food and drinks that were Texan in spirit. It was hard to do in a sushi bar, but I managed.

Strangely enough, it wasn't Texas-spirited food that I had trouble finding. It was Texas-spirited drinks. The best I could do was order an orange martini in honor of the Longhorns' school colors. Well! Pour me an orange martini and call me a smurf! My orange martini was blue. I was upset that the bartender must have mistakenly made me the wrong order, but  he said that my neon blue martini was indeed orange flavored. I tasted it, and it was. Bummer. But not really, because it sure tasted good!

The orange-flavour was from blue curacao. Blue curacao is made from the peels of Larahas, a citrus fruit that is basically a bitter cousin of the orange. Larahas grow on the island of Curacao, in the Caribbean just off the coast of Venezuela. I thought it would be very cool if the blue color was natural, but unfortunately, it's not. The liquor is clear, and the blue coloring is added.
