Designer Burgers the New Steak in Tough Times?


In tough times, diners aren't going for the prime rib or petit filet mignon.

Instead, they're looking to get their gourmet beef fix from designer hamburgers -- and restaurants are turning the fast-food sandwich into a "fine dining experience" all over the country, Voice of America News reported.

"I think with the economy the way it is now, honestly, I think there is more room for profit in a burger restaurant than there is in a steak house right now," Greg Cook, head chef at the BLT Mirage in Las Vegas, told VoA News. "I think that the general public can always afford to have a burger."

And they're not the only ones turning to toppings like fried eggs, spicy fresh aïoli and even truffles to take burgers to the next level.

Chicken Avocado BLT - Feast Your Eyes


Between candied bacon and bacon cupcakes, it may seem as if we're on a bacon jag around here. Dear Vegetarians: My apologies. I promise more non-omnivore posts ahead. But when blogger iammommy (as in, "hear me roar?") added roasted chicken, smooth avocado and peppered bacon to a classic BLT, we changed our lunch menu. If you can get your hands on some of the peppered bacon from venerable Wisconsin maker Nueske's, it may be BLTs from here on in.

Just the thing for your BLT: Baconnaise!

baconnaise!Last summer, I spent several days up in New York City, attending the Fancy Food Show. As I wandered around the showroom floor, I got the opportunity to talk to one of the founders of BaconSalt. During our conversation, he hinted that they were working on a new product and it would be one that would knock the socks off of every bacon lover out there.

Well, hold onto your socks, because this week, you'll now be able to buy bacon mayonnaise, or, as they're calling is Baconnaise! The BaconSalt team will be launching their new product in Seattle this Thursday night with a "a no-holds barred wrestling match between a giant slice of bacon and a giant jar of mayonnaise." Admission is $5 for the event and the early attendees will have the opportunity to trade in a boring old jar of mayonnaise for a jar of souped up Baconnaise.

The world is now changed forever.
