Slashfood Bowl: New York's Black and White cookie

a black and white cookie on a sheet of bakery paper
By the time you read this post today, I'll be on a train bound for New York City. While this is not strictly an eating trip (although I am looking forward to getting some New York pizza) while I'm in New York (during a break from this conference), there's one stop I have to make. I have to go to the William Greenberg, Jr. Desserts. You see, they make some of the world's best Black and White Cookies. I happen to have a boyfriend who went to high school in Manhattan and craves, lusts, longs for these cookies.

There's no bakery in the New England area that engenders such raw food emotions as these cookies stir up in Scott. My dad lived in Boston while he was going to high school, and while he remembers some good eating, there's nothing that generates such passion. This is why New York food so obviously trumps that stuff available in New England!

An assortment of tasty and tempting links

I haven't turned my computer off in days now. This is almost entirely due to the fact that I have a bunch of tabs open in Firefox and I keep thinking that I want to write about them all before I close the window and turn off the machine (I know that I could bookmark them all and come back later, but I know myself, if they aren't open and in front of my face, I will quickly forget). The problem has been that I haven't been able to muster up an entire post about any one of them, so instead they sit there, languishing, taunting me with their titles and icons. I've decided that instead of trying to come up with a single post for each one, I'd do a little round up and share with you the things that I'm finding appealing and delicious these days.

This one goes nicely with my split pea inquiry from earlier today. Last week, Lindsey Nair at the Fridge Magnet, inspired by a reader's question, put together a post all about ways to spruce up beans.

My boyfriend grew up just outside of New York City and so had a deep fondness for black and white cookies. He claims that nothing you can get in Philly even comes close. Lucky for me (as I was about to embark on a black and white cookie baking project) Ed Levine wrote a post about all about these cakey cookies and included a link as to where you can order them online.

Slashfood Ate (8): Black and White in a gray LA

black and white

Well, it looks like it's that time of the month or something for Jason Calacanis, who's in Los Angeles, with a crazy craving for a black and white cookie like the kind he used to have back in New York. Thanks to Nicole, you can always make an entire batch of them in your home kitchen, and if you're in LA today, you know that there's nothing like a rainy, gray day to hole yourself up in the kitchen with butter, sugar, and a nice warm oven.

However, there are some places in LA that have black and white cookies for which you might brave the rain-traffic - and these delis do have them - I called every single one on this list. But think: time and energy to bake-at-home vs. time and energy to brave horrible LA rain-drivers. You decide.
