Box Lunch: Penguin

penguin bento
For your lunchtime pleasure, I'm presenting a series of my favorite bento boxes. Bento are Japanese home-prepared meals served in special boxes, usually eaten for lunch at work or school. The boxes can range from austere lacquered trays to multi-tiered Hello Kitty confections of neon pink plastic. The meals themselves are anything from rice and leftovers to elaborate themed affairs of Pikachu-shaped dumplings with sesame seed eyes and carved radish trees. These days, bento enthusiasts from all over the world share their creations on Flickr.

Today's bento comes courtesy of Cooking Cute, a bento resource site. Our penguin onigiri is stuffed with salmon and wasabi and dressed in a a fetching nori penguin suit. His beak is made of bell pepper, as are the initials above his head. On the side are Trader Joe's chicken drummetes and some stir fried broccoli.

Coolio cooks with kids

Coolio is back (check out our interview with Coolio here) with another episode of his new cooking show (on My Damn Channel), Cooking with Coolio. This time he is a little bit more family-friendly and safe for viewing at work, as he makes "Spinach Even Your Kids Will Eat." It was nice to see him interact with Ethan in this video and the spinach he cooked up looked pretty darn tasty as well. So far, I'm liking what he's doing.

If you're enjoying watching Cooking with Coolio, consider leaving a video response. The best comment will win an autographed bell pepper. Imagine how much you could get for that thing on eBay!

Super Bowl Week: Bell Pepper and Goat Cheese Crostini

At a Super Bowl Party filled with Velveeta-laden spreads and greasy potato chips, crostini can be a welcome alternative. This recipe is one of my favorites: it pairs creamy goat cheese, tart red peppers and a toasty baguette for a refreshing break from the norm.

My bell pepper is pregnant with an alien

mutant bell pepper
This morning while I was prepapring vegetables to add to my egg white omelet for brunch, I came across something that sort of freaked me out in a fascinating, but still scary, way. I cut open a red bell pepper and when I peered inside to see if I had cleared the seeds, I saw a mutant green growth in the top! It kind of looks like a curled leaf or perhaps the beginning of a tiny new bell pepper.

It made me think my bell pepper was a mutant, and I wasn't sure if it was natural, or the result of some strange alien voodoo. What is wrong with this bell pepper? Is there something wrong with it? Will I die if I eat it? Or will I just spontaneously sprout small green bell peppers from somewhere on my body? My imagination sort of went crazy.

Then I got hungry so I added the pepper to the pan for the omelet. I have yet to see if I sprout bell peppers on my body somewhere.
