Taste Test: Hershey's Antioxidant Chocolate

hershey's anti-oxidant chocolate
Well, you knew that at some point, the mass producers of cheap, grocery store chocolate were going to have to do something about hopping aboard the "chocolate is healthy" train. Let's face it, even with the claim that yes, chocolate is healthy, no person in his or her right mind would actually try to justify eating a Snickers bar, a bag of M&Ms, or a handful of Hershey's Kisses by saying they were doing it for his or her health. It's dark chocolate that usually has all the health benefits, and I'm still pretty sure that the tiny Special Darks inside the bag of Hershey's Miniatures doesn't count either.

I saw the bag of Hershey's Antioxidant Milk Chocolate at my local grocery store when I was hunting around the shelves for -- I must confess, a bag of Twix. They're not actually in the same place, so I have no idea how I cam across this new stuff from Hershey's, but I did. Even though the packaging says "Natural Flavanol," I was pretty sure that the flavanol was very much unnaturally added to really up its antioxidant power. Health claims thus far have been for dark chocolate, so how would they have it in Hershey's milk chocolate version?

No matter. Sometimes we just shouldn't question.

Yumberry: The Newest Healthy Fruit

I first tried Yumberry juice, the new commercial nickname for the Yang Mei berry, a few years ago at the NY Fancy Food Show where it was being showcased for the first time. I have tried to contact the company in China since then to find out more, but never could connect with them. So I was excited to hear about this tasty juice coming onto the market soon.

Yang Mei, also called waxberries, are the waxy fruit of the wax myrtle. They have been collected for thousands of years in China and used medicinally. It is a healthy fruit, high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals; including vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin and carotene. The yumberry has over 100 varieties including white, pink, red, and purple. Usually the purple variety of yumberry has the best quality and taste.

SunOpta Fruit Group will soon start marketing Yumberry juice concentrate in the United States, and then in Canada one year later. This means you should hopefully start seeing the juice on market shelves in a few months after the juice companies develop their products. The juice samples I tried a few years ago were slightly tart and sweet with a nice, deep, fruity flavor all its own. Expect to see it used in various juices and juice blends similar to how pomegranate and acai have been.

The company says that "Yumberry will be used in diverse applications ranging from fruit juices to bakery applications, wines, cocktails and dairy products." Personally, I can't wait to play around with the juice in cocktails and I think there are a lot of possibilities; although it's going to be strange asking for a bottle of Yumberry juice in the store or a Yumberry Sour cocktail at a bar.

More health benefits attributed to cocoa

Flavanols are the chemicals in chocolate, as well as in wine and teas, that are responsible for many of the nutritional bonuses that it offers, including improved circulation and general heart health. These antioxidants have also been shown to increase the flow of blood to the brain in research presented to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Increased blood flow to the brain has been associated with improved cognitive performance in healthy people, as it carries more oxygen to the brain than when high-flavanol cocoa is not eaten. Since one of the symptoms of dementia is a decrease in the flow of blood to the brain, scientists think that cocoa that is high in flavanols could be used to decrease the impact of the disease.

Unfortunately, many commercial chocolates are low in flavanols, so you probably won't experience any of the benefits demonstrated by this study if you eat an extra Snickers bar. The reason for this is that flavanols add a bitter taste to chocolate, which many manufacturers - especially of sweet milk chocolates - prefer to eliminate from their final products. An exception to this is CocoaVia, which is specifically infused with flavanols. CocoaVia aside, the highest concentration of flavanols is found in cocoa, meaning that dark chocolate is a better choice for your health than milk chocolate, but a cup of hot cocoa is going to be your best bet.

Hershey's to release three new bars

This is going to come in a little too late for Valentine's Day, but is still good news for all you chocolate lovers out there. Based on the trends consumers have been following over the past year, Hershey's apparently plans to expand their chocolate bar line with the introduction of three new products.

The first is an organic chocolate bar, which really comes as little surprise since consumers can't seem to get enough organic into their shopping carts these days. Second will be a "whole-bean chocolate" which, according to the President and CEO of Hershey Co., will have increased fiber and 40% less sugar than their regular chocolate bars. Finally, they will be introducing an antioxidant milk chocolate which will boast the same health benefits of dark chocolate, but with the creamy rich taste of milk chocolate instead.

They also plan to continue their focus on portion-control products, offering consumers smaller, healthier sizes of their various snack foods. As they say, everything in moderation.

Frozen energy: Belizza Acai sorbet

acai sorbetAcai is all the rage these days. The berry that hails from the Amazon rainforest is an antioxidant powerhouse that blows even blueberries and pomegranates out of the water. Fitness-conscious people love acai for its energy-sustaining properties. I have no idea what it is in the acai berry, but I remember the first time I tried it - it was the Acai smoothie at Jamba Juice. I think I was awake for four straight days.

You can add acai berries to smoothies and drinks, but now Belizza has used it as a base for sorbet. That would make it dessert! Belizza's acai sorbets come in three flavors - acai banana, plain acai, and acai mango.
