Dried Black Currants hit US market

Black Currants, a 'super fruit' rich in anti-oxidants, have been under represented in the US market until just recently. Now sweetened, dried black currants are becoming available in a multitude of ways. Kendall Frozen Fruits has now made them available so that they can be used in a plethora of products like "healthy snacks, trail mixes, cereals, yogurt, muffins, salads, cookies, vinegars and other applications."

The black currant is known for its intense, rich, fruit flavor so well loved in the liqueur cassis and other alcoholic beverages. A while ago I wrote about CurrantC, a delicious black currant juice beverage. I'm so glad we are now going to have other black currant food options available.

Besides anti-oxidants, vitamin C, and Iron; black currents also contain anthocyanin compounds which may help the body fight against diseases like Arthritis, Cancer and Alzheimer's disease. I love it when healthy and tasty are combined in one product.

Sunday Happy Hour: The Rosy Pom

Here's a cocktail that is actually good for you. Chock full of anti-oxidants from the Sence rose nectar, cranberry juice, and pomegranate juice. Recipe courtesy of CocktailAtlas.com.

Rosy Pom

The Rosy Pom was crated for the Erotic Café inside the ZUMANITY Theatre at New York-New York in Las Vegas. Zumanity is a provocative cabaret-style production with a Cirque du Soleil twist. This playful cocktail, made with SEX Vodka and rose nectar, is the perfect drink to get you in the mood for a sexy show.

1.5oz Sex Vodka
.5oz Sence Rose Nectar
.5oz Cointreau
1oz Cranberry Juice
Splash of POM pomegranate juice

Combine ingredients with ice.
Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish with a rose petal.

Spice up your life - and health!

It's well known that many fruits and berries contain powerful antioxidants which are beneficial to your health. Antioxidants are part of the class of phytochemicals, also called phytonutrients, which are substances found in plants that provide certain not necessary, but healthful chemicals to aid the body in fighting disease, inflammation; and reducing cardio-vascular disease and cancer risk. What isn't so widely known is that many herbs and spices have even greater amounts of antioxidants by weight than do fruits. Some everyday herbs and spices that you can use are cinnamon, ginger, oregano, and turmeric. Wikipedia has a thorough list of phytochemicals found in many foods that you can use to add more of these nutrients to your diet. I knew there were other reasons why I like spices so much.
