McDonald's Execs Discuss Angus Snack Wraps and Smoothies

Photo: McDonald's

We attended a product-tasting event yesterday afternoon in a three-story restaurant with wood-paneled walls and modern accents, where people were using the free wifi and enjoying complimentary manicures. Sounds fancy, eh? The restaurant, by the way, was a McDonald's. (And those manicures were exclusive to the event.)

This Golden Arches location -- one of five in New York featuring the modern renovation -- set the scene perfectly for an event at which McDonald's executives and representatives made it loudly known that they care about the quality of their ingredients, they are constantly innovating and they base many of their actions on customer feedback.

The products being unveiled included Angus Snack Wraps, McCafé Real Fruit Smoothies, and McCafé Frappés (which have been rolling out nationally for the past few months). On hand to chat about the products were McDonald's Director of Culinary Innovation, Chef Dan Coudreaut, and the Director of Product Innovation and Development, Danielle Paris.

The Angus Snack Wraps will launch in New York on June 14, and will go nationwide on August 10. They'll come in the same three varieties as their larger counterparts: Deluxe (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, American cheese, mayo, mustard); Bacon & Cheese (onions, pickles, American cheese, ketchup, mustard, a strip of bacon); and Mushroom & Swiss (sauteed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, mayo). Each flour tortilla wrap contains half an Angus patty and the various toppings.

Shanghai Surprise - Authentic American Burger Experience

Expat foodies have been known to sniff out American favorites in every corner of the world, whether it's bagels, burgers or cupcakes. According to a review we read, even in China, it looks like a seriously good American burger can be had at Bistro Burger. Made from 100-percent Angus beef, imported from the States and ground on the premises, this Shanghai burger has the potential to be better than most you'd get in the U.S. We don't know what the meat to fat ratio is, but we'd be willing to try them regardless.

In addition to ordering a variety of international themed burgers, homesick visitors and expats can take advantage of the restaurant's October promotion, where they can "get a free milkshake with any burger." Apparently, authentic milkshakes are a big deal in these parts, due to the fact that many are made with ultrapasteurized or nonperishable milk, whereas Bistro Burger uses the fresh stuff.

The review also raves about the eatery's chili cheese fries, pronouncing them the "best" in Shanghai, as well as homemade apple pie packed with honest-to-goodness imported U.S. apples and Brooklyn beer. Who says you can't find the comforts of home halfway round the world?

A small fry is going after a super-sized giant.

McDonald's has been sued by a Minnesota burger joint over the use of the phrase "Who's Your Patty?" Lions Tap of Eden Prairie, Minn., has filed a copyright suit in U.S. District Court over the Golden Arches' use of the phrase in conjunction with their Angus Third Pounder burger advertisements, Nation's Restaurant News reports.

Lions Tap, which has been serving up burgers since 1958, registered the phrase with the state of Minnesota four years ago, according to the court documents.
