"Tim Hortons" news and stories

Coffee Giants Unite for Sustainability

What's got Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks and Tim Hortons working together? No, there's no mass coffee merger in the works, but rather, a bipartisan acknowledgment that their daily coffee to-go routine is in need of a serious sustainability overhaul -- all that non-biodegradable Styrofoam is so pre-"green."

As The Boston Globe reports, the three coffee giants attended a "cup summit" at MIT this April (fittingly, on Earth Day), which was hosted by the Director of Environmental Impact at Starbucks, Jim Hanna. There, they met with cup manufacturers, municipal officials and waste transporters. As Hanna told the Globe, "sustainability is a problem we all have to share together."

The companies began sharing research on financial efficiency, consumer recycling habits, even prototype cups and plans for a "waste-free zone" pilot program. The perfect, sustainable coffee cup would need to be "recyclable or compostable, keep coffee hot, and not cost franchises too much," the Globe notes.

Woman fired for giving "Timbit" to toddler

The woman, an employee of a Tim Hortons coffee and donut chain in Toronto, gave a fussy toddler the tiny, 16-cent donut (called a "Timbit") to eat, and was promptly fired by her overzealous manager.

The woman said she would have paid for the donut, but the store was busy and she had to work.

As soon as Tim Hortons' corporate offices heard of the firing, they quickly issued a statement that the firing was a mistake (it was implied that the woman was re-hired).

Seriously, though: who would want to go back and work for that maniac? Whatever happened to the customer coming first?

Hopefully, the woman will be able to get away from the boss with the anger management issues, and get a better job. Like at the local IHOP.

Canadian troops request Tim Hortons at base

Some troops may have a craving for a taste of home, but others won't rest until they really bring their favorites out to the base. Canadian troops deployed to Afghanistan are asking the iconic Canadian coffee and donut chain, Tim Hortons, to set up shop in the massive Kandahar Air Base. The soldiers maintain that because the US troops currently at the base are enjoying Burger King and Subway franchises, that Tim Hortons should do the same, as it just "wouldn't be a Canadian base without a Tim Hortons."

In the past, the company has refused requests to set up a full store, stating that their strict quality controls could not be monitored in a location so far away. The company faithfully participates in programs which provide coffee and "goodie bags" for the soldiers, as well as having set up shop on military bases across Canada. A company spokesperson says that they will consider sending a smaller coffee cart or trailer to represent the brand on the base.
